The Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald 'n' Gold' has small, deep green leaves broadly edged in golden yellow, turning copper-red with the first cold weather. Native to Japan, it is the warmest-toned of the evergreen patio shrubs.
Its distinctive feature is the extent of its seasonal change: the green-and-gold contrast of the warmer months gives way to copper-red tones in winter, before returning in spring.
Which Euonymus standard should you choose?
Three cultivars trained as standards, with very different variegation:
- 'Emerald 'n' Gold' (this plant) — green leaves edged in golden yellow, with red tones in winter. The warmest variety.
- 'Emerald Gaiety' — green leaves edged in creamy white, with pinkish highlights in winter (H90 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The brightest variety.
- 'Harlequin' — irregular creamy-white marbling, with almost white young shoots (H90 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The most contrasting variety.
Exposure & placement
Euonymus tolerates a very wide range of exposures, but its variegation is more pronounced in the sun. In the shade, the yellow gradually turns green and the contrast softens.
- Exposure: sun to partial shade — it even tolerates full shade, with less pronounced variegation.
- Placement: terrace, entrance, path, balcony, courtyard — including poorly lit corners.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -20 °C.
- Soil type: ordinary and well-drained — Euonymus adapts to almost any growing medium.
The red winter tones are all the more pronounced when the plant is exposed to the cold: this is an evergreen that benefits from staying outdoors all year round.
Watering & care
Euonymus is one of the most tolerant shrubs in the catalogue. A well-draining growing medium is all it needs to grow in a pot, and the foliage always signals a problem before it worsens.
- Watering: moderate — once or twice a week in summer for this pot volume, and greatly reduced in winter.
- Drainage: essential — never leave standing water in the saucer.
- Pruning: twice a year, in May and September — Euonymus tolerates pruning very well and regrows from old wood.
- Green shoots: remove those that grow back entirely green, as they are more vigorous and eventually dominate the variegation.
- Suckers: remove shoots that appear along the trunk, as they ruin the standard form.
- Fertiliser: fertiliser for shrubs once at the beginning of spring.
A branch that reverts, meaning it loses its variegation and grows back entirely green, should be cut at its base: if left in place, it will take over within a season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The gold of its variegation warms up a terrace all year round, and takes on an extra dimension in winter when the red appears.
- For a trio of Euonymus, line it up with 'Emerald Gaiety' and 'Harlequin' — the same habit, with three complementary variegations.
- For a duo of golden plants, place a Goldcrest Wilma Cypress alongside it, with golden foliage — two warm-toned evergreens, one conical and the other crown-shaped.
- For a bold contrast, add an Eucalyptus 'Azura' — the blue-grey eucalyptus and the gold of the spindle complement each other directly.
- To frame an entrance, place two identical plants on either side of the door, in matching containers — the symmetry works all year round with an evergreen.
Against a dark wall, the golden edge of the leaves catches the light and clearly outlines the crown.

- Cut back branches that revert to solid green: shoots that have lost their variegation are more vigorous than the others and take over within a season. Cutting them at the base as soon as they appear preserves the cultivar's character.
- Prune without hesitation: Euonymus regrows perfectly from old wood. Two light trims per year, in May and September, keep the crown neat without risk.
- Leave it outside in winter: the foliage's copper-red hues are triggered by the cold. A plant brought indoors or sheltered will remain green and gold, without this seasonal change.
