Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald Gaiety' has small, deep green leaves broadly edged in creamy white, which take on pinkish hues as soon as the first cold weather arrives. Native to Japan, it is one of the few patio shrubs whose foliage changes colour with the seasons.
Its distinctive feature is this change: while most evergreens retain the same colour throughout the year, 'Emerald Gaiety' turns pink in winter and then regains its bright white colouring in spring.
Which Euonymus trained on a stem should you choose?
Three cultivars trained on a stem, with very different variegation patterns:
- 'Emerald Gaiety' (this plant) — green leaves edged in creamy white, with pinkish hues in winter. The brightest variety.
- 'Emerald 'n' Gold' — green leaves edged in golden yellow, with red hues in winter (H90 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The warmest variety.
- 'Harlequin' — irregular creamy-white marbling, with almost white young shoots (H90 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The most contrasting variety.
Exposure & location
Euonymus tolerates a very wide range of exposures, but the variegation is more pronounced in the Sun. In the shade, the white gradually turns green and the contrast softens.
- Exposure: Sun to partial shade — it even tolerates full shade, with less pronounced variegation.
- Location: terrace, entrance, pathway, balcony, courtyard — including poorly lit corners.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -20 °C.
- Soil type: ordinary and well-drained — Euonymus adapts to almost any growing medium.
The pinkish winter hues are all the more pronounced when the plant is exposed to the cold: this is an evergreen that benefits from staying outdoors all year round.
Watering & care
Euonymus is one of the most tolerant shrubs in the catalog. A well-draining substrate is sufficient for growing it in a pot, and the foliage always signals a problem before it worsens.
- Watering: moderate — once or twice a week in summer for this pot size, and much less in winter.
- Drainage: essential — never leave standing water in the saucer.
- Pruning: twice a year, in May and September — Euonymus responds very well to pruning and regrows from old wood.
- Green shoots: remove those that grow back entirely green, as they are more vigorous and eventually dominate the variegation.
- Suckers: remove shoots that appear along the trunk, as they ruin the standard form.
- Fertilizer: apply shrub fertilizer once at the beginning of spring.
A branch that reverts, meaning it loses its variegation and grows back entirely green, must be cut at its base: if left in place, it will take over within one season.

Its white variegation brightens a dark corner of the terrace all year round, where blooms last only a few weeks.
- For a trio of Euonymus, line it up with 'Emerald 'n' Gold' and 'Harlequin' — the same growth habit, with three variegations that complement one another.
- For foliage contrast, place a 'Etna' Cherry Laurel beside it — the solid deep green makes the white variegation stand out.
- To frame an entrance, install two identical plants on either side of the door, in matching containers — symmetry works year-round with an evergreen.
- To complement a deciduous plant, add the Magnolia stellata — the Euonymus fills the space in winter, while the magnolia takes over in March.
