Frequently Asked Questions
How do you care for the silver variegation of a Fatsia Spider Web? Avoid direct sunlight that dulls the silver highlights, wipe the large leaves every 3 to 4 weeks to remove dust, and maintain moderate indirect light to preserve the intensity of the splashes.
How often should you water a Fatsia Japonica Spider Web? About once a week in spring and summer, and less frequently in winter, always allowing the top of the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

🌿 Spectacular green and silver variegated foliage • 🌤️ Partial shade to indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • ✨ Easy care • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H50 cm | Pot Ø17 cm
The Fatsia Japonica Spider Web, also called Variegated Japanese Aralia, is a graphic plant with large deeply lobed palmate leaves, dark green splashed with silver like a spider web. Its spectacular and bright foliage allows it to dress low-lit spaces with a strong and contemporary plant presence.
Native to Japan and South Korea, where it grows in moist undergrowth and coastal areas, it stands out within the Fatsia collection for its unique silver variegation — more graphic and luminous than the Variegata version. Its tolerance to cool temperatures also makes it one of the few plants suitable for dark entrances and hallways able to withstand winter cold, alongside our selection of cold-resistant plants.
Which Fatsia variety to choose?
The Fatsia genus available at Verdeia comes in two variegated varieties with distinct characters:
- Fatsia Japonica Spider Web (this plant) — large dark green palmate leaves with irregular silver splashes, H50 cm. The most graphic and brightest.
- Fatsia Japonica Variegata — large palmate leaves with cream edges and areas, H60 cm. The most classic cream-variegated.
The Spider Web is the only variety to offer this effect of irregular silver spots on a dark green background — a unique visual texture that the Variegata, with its more regular cream edges, does not replicate.
Exposure & placement
The Fatsia Japonica Spider Web is one of the few large variegated plants that tolerates partial shade without losing its silver shine. Its splashes remain visible even in low-light spaces — a valuable advantage for challenging interiors. It is also one of the few indoor plants to thrive well through winter in cool rooms.
- Ideal exposure: Partial shade to bright indirect light — north-facing window, hallway, entrance, cool room.
- Tolerates: low light, cool temperatures down to 5 °C, indirect sunlight.
- Avoid: prolonged direct sunlight which dulls and burns the variegated foliage.
- Temperature: 10–22 °C — one of the most cold-resistant in the catalog.
- Substrate: rich, light, and draining — universal potting soil with compost.
Each plant is unique: the intensity of the silver variegation naturally varies depending on light and season.
Watering & care
The Fatsia prefers a slightly moist substrate without ever being waterlogged — yellowing leaves are almost always due to overwatering. Check with the finger test method before each watering.
- Watering: moderate — let the substrate surface dry slightly between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer; reduce in winter.
- Water: room temperature water.
- Humidity: mist occasionally to prevent dry leaf edges.
- Drainage: essential — pot must have drainage holes, empty saucer after watering.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, once a month in spring-summer.
Each plant is unique: watering frequency naturally varies depending on pot size, ambient temperature, and season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The large silver palmate leaves of the Fatsia Spider Web create a strong graphic contrast — its silhouette is immediately recognizable and structures the space without needing to be paired with other plants. To design around it, find our ideas to create a tropical atmosphere.
- As a centerpiece in a dark entrance or hallway: its silver variegation captures every bit of available light — slip it into a Brussels anthracite decorative pot whose dark base amplifies the silver reflections of the leaves.
- In a fresh and graphic composition: pair it with a Fern and an Asplenium for a trio of shade plants with very contrasting foliage — the palmate leaves of the Fatsia, the cut fronds of the Fern, and the wavy leaves of the Asplenium. Group them in a collection of matching decorative pots for a cohesive set.
- Size contrast: pair it with the Fatsia Variegata to play with two variegations in the same family — the irregular silver splashes of the Spider Web against the regular cream edges of the Variegata.
- Natural decorative pot: the dark green and silver tones naturally match a Capi Nature Groove Taupe decorative pot — the sand shade enhances the silver reflections without competing with them.
Verdeia tips
- Regularly wipe the large leaves: the broad palmate leaves collect dust that dulls the silver reflections — a damp cloth every 3 to 4 weeks is enough to keep their full shine and spider web effect.
- Take advantage of its cold tolerance: unlike most houseplants, Fatsia enjoys cool rooms in winter — an unheated entryway or a conservatory suits it perfectly, where many other plants suffer.
- Rotate the pot every month: Fatsia naturally grows toward the light — monthly rotation ensures a balanced silhouette on all sides and prevents asymmetrical growth.
