🌸 Double flowers with three rows of petals • 🍷 Purple-burgundy edged in white • 📅 Flowering from February to April • 🌘 Partial shade to shade • ❄️ Hardy to -34 °C • 🌿 Evergreen foliage
Helleborus orientalis 'Double Ellen Red' is a double-flowered Lenten rose from the Double Ellen® series developed by Ellen Akerboom at the Nachtvlinder nursery in Ter Aar. European horticultural selection (the Netherlands), it is one of the few shade plants in the catalogue to flower in late winter, beneath trees or against a north-facing wall.
Its flowers have three rows of almost round petals, purple-burgundy marbled with white along the edges, whereas most hellebores have only one. They open from February to late April depending on the weather, on upright 30 to 35 cm stems, above divided evergreen foliage.
Which hellebore should you choose?
Nine hellebores in the catalogue, taking turns throughout the winter:
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen Red' (this plant) — double purple-burgundy flowers, from February to April. The most intense.
- Christmas rose 'Christmas Carol' — single pure-white flowers, from late October to March. The earliest.
- Christmas rose 'Diamonfire' — single cream-white and green flowers with dusty pink undertones, from December to March. The most vigorous, in bouquets on red stems.
- Hellebore 'Angel Glow' — single frosted-pink flowers that turn deep pink and green, from December to March. The flowers with the most changing hues.
- Lenten rose 'Dacaya' — single medium-pink flowers striped with burgundy, from February to April. The most flowering, supplied as a large clump.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen Pink' — double pale pink flowers speckled with purple, from February to April. The most nuanced.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen White' — double snow-white flowers, from February to April. The brightest in the shade.
- Majorca hellebore 'Purple Marble' — single cream-green flowers washed with purple, from January to April. Cream-marbled blue-green foliage.
- Silver 'Silver Dollar' Hellebore — single cream-green flowers with yellow centres, from February to April. The most silvery foliage.
Christmas roses and Lenten roses, such as Angel Glow, withstand intense cold; hellebores with marbled or silvery foliage are best chosen for a sheltered balcony.
Exposure & position
The Lenten rose comes from woodlands: it prefers dappled light, tolerates deep shade and mainly fears the scorching summer sun on its foliage.
- Exposure: partial shade or shade, with filtered light ideal.
- Position: at the foot of a tree, against a north-facing wall, in a shady courtyard, along a terrace.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -34 °C — it stays outdoors all winter.
- Soil type: moist, rich in humus and well drained, neutral to alkaline.
Hellebore flowers face the ground: raised in a pot or placed on top of a low wall, you can finally see their centres.
Watering & care
Hellebores like cool conditions but not stagnant water: checking the substrate with your finger before watering prevents excess, and a pot that stays waterlogged eventually causes suffocated roots.
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate fresh in spring and summer, and greatly reduce watering in winter.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertiliser: apply organic fertiliser in autumn.
- Pruning: cut the old leaves at the base in December-January, before the buds emerge.
- Repotting: rarely — hellebores settle in for years and do not like being moved.
Wear gloves when pruning: hellebore sap can irritate the skin.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its purplish burgundy is a rare colour in late winter: it brightens a shady spot where nothing else is flowering yet, and choosing neighbours according to the exposure ensures a display that lasts all year.
- For a woodland arrangement, pair it with a Korean Fern — the same exposure, and its fine, evergreen foliage takes over visually after flowering.
- For a bright contrast, plant a Carex 'Ice Dance' at its feet — its cream edging brightens the dark burgundy of the flowers.
- For staggered flowering, place a Laurier-tin 'Eve Price' next to it — evergreen, its pale pink winter flowers complement the purple of the hellebores.
- To enhance the pot, choose the Capi Nature Groove taupe pot — a warm, light shade that brings out the burgundy, whereas a black pot would dull it.
Cut and floated in a bowl of water, the double hellebore flowers make a spectacular table decoration that lasts for several days.
Verdeia tips
- Remove the old leaves in January: they hide the buds and may develop black spots. Cut at the base, they allow the double flowers to bloom in full view.
- Leave it outdoors: the Lenten rose needs cold to flower and can withstand temperatures down to -34 °C. Our advice on cold-hardy plants explains how to protect the roots in a pot during severe frost.
- Don't move it: once established, it forms a fuller clump each year but does not tolerate being transplanted well.
