Frequently Asked Questions
How do you dry Statice flowers? Cut the stems at full bloom, remove the lower leaves, and hang them upside down in a dry, airy place — the flowers keep their lilac color for several months without treatment.
Why does my Limonium bloom so little? It’s almost always due to lack of sunlight or soil that’s too rich — move it to full sun and avoid fertilizers, as poor, well-drained soil encourages more abundant flowering.

🌸 Airy lilac-white flowering all summer • ☀️ Full sun • 💧 Very drought resistant • 🌿 Evergreen green-purple spotted foliage • 📏 H60 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
Limonium 'Salt Lake', also called Statice or Sea Lavender, is a remarkable flowering perennial known for its airy panicles of tiny lilac-white flowers that seem to float above green foliage speckled with purple. The effect is light, almost vaporous — like a cloud of color resting on the flowerbed. Each flower dries on the stem and retains its color, extending the decoration well beyond the flowering period.
A European horticultural selection from the Netherlands, this cultivar is part of our outdoor plant selection. Its tolerance to salt, sea spray, and poor soils makes it especially suitable for exposed urban balconies and terraces, as well as dry Mediterranean gardens. Dried flowers are highly prized in bouquets — their preservation technique is simple, as explained in our guide on plants to gift and their symbolism.
Exposure & Location
Limonium 'Salt Lake' is a full sun plant that blooms more profusely with generous exposure. In partial shade, flowering is lighter and the foliage gradually loses its characteristic purple hues. Its resistance to salty soils and sea spray makes it an excellent choice for coastal balconies or very windy locations.
- Ideal exposure: full sun — at least 6 hours of direct light per day.
- Locations: terrace, exposed balcony, garden bed in open ground, gravel border, or rockery.
- Resistance: salt, sea spray, wind, drought, poor soil.
- Temperature: perennial hardy to −10 °C if soil is well drained.
- Substrate: light and very well draining — Mediterranean potting soil or universal potting soil + 30% sand or perlite.
The poorer and better drained the soil, the more abundant the flowering — Limonium prefers frugality over rich substrate.
Watering & Care
Limonium 'Salt Lake' is one of the most water-efficient perennials — once well established, it can withstand several weeks of drought without damage. It is one of the emblematic plants for low-maintenance planters and terraces for city dwellers who want color without daily care.
- Watering: very infrequent — allow the substrate to dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: once every 10 to 15 days during hot summer weather; almost none in autumn-winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot must have drainage holes, no standing water.
- Fertilizer: none or very light — overfeeding reduces flowering.
- Flowering care: cut faded stems to prolong flowering; leave inflorescences to dry on the plant for a natural decorative effect.
In pots, water generously during the first summer after planting to encourage rooting — afterwards, Limonium almost entirely manages drought on its own.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
The lightness of the panicles of Limonium 'Salt Lake' makes it a striking contrast plant — it visually lightens any arrangement and creates movement in flowerbeds even without wind. For creating a successful outdoor green corner, find our ideas for creating a relaxing plant space.
- In a Mediterranean trio: pair it with a Lavender Hidcote Blue and a Pennisetum Hameln — the upright blue spikes of lavender, the airy lilac panicles of Limonium, and the flowing tufts of Pennisetum create a trio of light textures that move together in the wind.
- In a terrace pot: its green foliage spotted with purple and lilac flowers perfectly match a Jazz lavender decorative pot — a harmonious purple-toned color scheme that enhances the composition’s coherence.
- In a gravel border: plant in groups of 3 in front of a Mediterranean Olive for a composition fully in the spirit of garrigue — the olive’s gray-green foliage, the evergreen tufts of Limonium, and the airy lilac panicles create a very coherent color palette.
- In a dried bouquet: cut stems at full bloom and hang them upside down in a well-ventilated place to dry — flowers keep their lilac color for several months without special treatment.
Verdeia Tips
- Plant in a very well-draining substrate: Limonium dislikes stagnant moisture in winter much more than summer drought — heavy or poorly drained soil causes collar rot and plant death during the first cold winter.
- Prune faded stems to prolong flowering: cut spent inflorescences at the base to stimulate new flowering stems — or leave them on the plant for a natural dried bouquet effect lasting until autumn.
- Protect the collar in winter in cold regions: cover the plant base with a thick mineral mulch (gravel, pumice) to drain moisture in winter — it is cold moisture, not frost, that kills Limonium.
Limonium 'Salt Lake' is also an excellent melliferous plant — its flowers attract butterflies and bees throughout the summer flowering period.
