Frequently Asked Questions
Why is a Rademachera losing its leaves? The most common cause is exposure to cigarette smoke or air pollution — even briefly, it triggers a massive leaf drop that is hard to stop.
How often should you water a Rademachera sinica? About once a week in spring and summer, keeping the soil slightly moist — if the leaves turn yellow, first check if the soil has stayed too wet for more than 4 consecutive days.

🌿 Bright green compound foliage, very airy • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌱 Easy care • 📏 H27 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
Rademachera sinica, nicknamed the Chinese doll or Emerald tree, is a tropical shrub with a branched and airy habit, featuring bipinnate compound leaves of an intense bright green. Its oval, finely pointed leaflets give it a visual lightness that few other indoor plants have at this size — a lace-like plant effect that lights up as soon as a light source passes through it. Native to the subtropical mountains of southern China and Taiwan, it belongs to the Bignoniaceae family — the same as Campsis and Catalpa.
Among the easy-care plants, it is a plant that can accompany an interior for years without particular constraints, provided it is given good light, balanced watering, and is kept absolutely away from any smoke source — its main vulnerability.
Exposure & Location
Rademachera sinica needs bright indirect light to keep its dense and shiny foliage. In insufficient light, stems elongate, leaves spread out, and the plant loses its compact habit. Easy indoor plants for city dwellers all share this same need for a well-defined spot from the start — and Rademachera is the perfect example.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light — east or west window, very bright desk.
- Tolerates: a few hours of gentle morning or late afternoon sun.
- To avoid: prolonged partial shade that stretches stems, intense direct sun, drafts, cigarette smoke.
- Temperature: 18 to 22 °C — tolerates 12–16 °C in winter but sensitive to sudden changes.
- Substrate: quality universal potting soil with good drainage.
Rademachera is particularly sensitive to cigarette smoke and air pollution — it loses leaves at the slightest contact. Avoid any location near smoking areas or combustion devices.
Watering & Care
Rademachera prefers a substrate that is slightly moist at all times — neither dry nor waterlogged. Yellowing leaves are the most common sign of watering imbalance, either too much or too little.
- Watering: regular — keep substrate slightly moist, never soggy.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer; reduce in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes, empty saucer after watering.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants, every 2 weeks in spring-summer.
- Pruning: light shaping pruning in spring to maintain a compact habit and stimulate branching.
If the substrate stays too wet for more than 4 consecutive days, let it dry slightly before watering again — this is the most common adjustment to make during the first weeks to find the right rhythm.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
The airy lightness of Rademachera sinica foliage makes it an ideal plant to balance a dense plant arrangement — it brings transparency where other plants create density. Discover how to combine plants to create a tropical atmosphere by playing with leaf textures.
- On a very bright desk: its compact size and non-intrusive foliage are perfect for a workspace — placed in a white Gabriel decorative pot, the set is sober and elegant without distraction.
- In a trio of contrasting textures: pair it with a Ficus Ginseng with a knotted sculptural trunk and a Polyscias Fabian with round purple leaves — airy foliage, sculptural trunk, and colorful leaves, three very distinct styles in one composition.
- On a plant shelf: its H27 cm | Pot Ø12 cm size fits perfectly on a bright shelf — in an ochre Gabriel decorative pot, the warm terracotta tone warms the bright green foliage.
- Decorative pot and color scheme: the intense bright green stands out especially against natural backgrounds — a gray Borneo basket creates a dialogue between the natural fiber and the mineral lightness of the foliage.
Placed in front of a bright window, light passes through the Rademachera’s leaflets and reveals all the shades of green in its compound foliage — a stained-glass plant effect that few indoor plants offer at this price.
Verdeia Tips
- Choose its final location upon arrival: Rademachera reacts to changes in conditions — once placed in a good bright spot, avoid moving it to prevent leaf drop.
- Lightly prune in spring: pruning the longest stems just above a leaf node stimulates branching and maintains the compact, dense habit that makes the plant so charming.
- Keep it away from any smoke source: even brief exposure to cigarette smoke can trigger massive leaf drop that is hard to stop — this is the plant’s most important constraint, to anticipate before choosing its location.
Rademachera can be placed outdoors in light shade once temperatures exceed 15 °C — a summer exposure protected from direct rain and intense sun greatly strengthens its foliage for winter.
