Rosmarinus officinalis, or rosemary, is a perennial aromatic plant native to the Mediterranean basin. Trained on a stem, its slender woody trunk bears a dense crown of grey-green needle-like leaves, halfway between a culinary herb and an ornamental feature of the Mediterranean garden.
Its distinctive feature when trained on a stem is the exposed trunk: where a bushy rosemary spreads along the ground, the stemmed form frees up the space below and sits at eye level. Two sizes are available, from a tabletop plant to a terrace shrub.
Light & placement
Rosemary is a full-sun plant, and the intensity of its aroma depends directly on it. The more light it receives, the more concentrated its essential oils become and the more abundant its flowering.
- Light: full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sun per day.
- Placement: south- or southwest-facing balcony, sunny terrace, urban vegetable garden, open entrance area.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -10 °C — can stay outdoors all year round in most regions.
- Soil type: light, well-draining and rather poor — Mediterranean potting mix enriched with sand or perlite.
Stagnant moisture is the only real risk for this plant: rosemary is far more likely to die from being waterlogged than from drying out or freezing.
Watering & care
Rosemary tolerates drought remarkably well once established, but remains highly sensitive to excess water. A well-draining substrate is essential, and the foliage always signals a problem before it worsens.
- Watering: moderate — let the substrate dry out between waterings, once or twice a week in summer and very sparingly in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes, a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom, and always empty the saucer.
- Pruning: light pruning after flowering, in June or July, to keep the crown compact.
- Suckers: remove shoots that appear along the trunk, as they ruin the stemmed form.
- Harvesting: regularly pick the tips of the stems to encourage branching.
- Fertilizer: very little — overly rich soil encourages foliage at the expense of aroma.
Never prune into the bare old wood: rosemary does not regrow from a leafless branch, and the cut leaves a permanent gap in the crown.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
The stemmed form adds height to a plant arrangement and frees up floor space, making it especially valuable on a narrow terrace or urban balcony.
- For a Mediterranean aromatic duo, pair it with a stemmed bay laurel — two aromatic plants trained on stems, with complementary foliage and fragrances for cooking.
- For a southern-style arrangement, place an olive tree beside it — the rosemary's grey-green needles complement the olive tree's silvery leaves.
- For a colour contrast, add 'Hidcote Blue' lavender at its base — same light, same watering needs, and two honey-rich blue-violet blooms.
- To enhance the pot, a terracotta or natural-fibre container wicks away moisture better than a glazed pot, making it ideal for rosemary.
The H45 cm size can be placed on a terrace table or windowsill; the H90 cm size stands alone on the floor and structures a corner.

- Prioritize drainage over watering: rosemary dislikes stagnant moisture far more than it fears drought. A layer of clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot and a sandy substrate are better than any watering schedule.
- Never prune into the old wood: rosemary does not regrow from a bare branch. Light pruning after flowering, always within the green foliage, maintains the crown safely.
- Harvest all year round: as the foliage is evergreen, the stems can be picked even in winter. Each harvest stimulates two new shoots and thickens the crown.

Can I return a plant?
Since plants are living beings, standard returns are not possible. However, we guarantee good health upon delivery: if the plant arrives damaged, it will be replaced free of charge. For any other cases (order error, decorative pot, accessory), returns are possible within 14 days.
