🌿 Shiny umbel foliage • 🌤️ Indirect light / Partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • ✨ Easy care • 📏 H45 cm | Pot Ø13 cm
The Schefflera Charlotte, also called the Umbrella tree, is a tropical indoor plant with an elegant and balanced silhouette. Its shiny, varnished foliage, made up of leaflets arranged in an umbel, gives it an architectural look that structures the space without overwhelming it — a strong plant presence in an accessible size.
Native to Taiwan and Australia, it has established itself as one of the most versatile tropical plants for modern interiors: vigorous, tolerant of partial shade, and steady growing, it naturally appears among the species recommended in our easy-care selection.
Which Schefflera variety to choose?
The Schefflera range available at Verdeia covers very different sizes and characters — here’s how the Charlotte fits in:
- Schefflera Charlotte (this plant) — deep shiny green umbel foliage, balanced and dense habit, H45 cm. The most classic and accessible.
- Schefflera Nora — dense shiny green umbels, compact and branched habit, H60–75 cm. The bushiest.
- Schefflera Gerda — finely cut palmate foliage, airy habit, H35 cm. The most graphic in small size.
- Schefflera Gold Capella — variegated green and golden yellow foliage, upright bushy habit, H75–130 cm. The brightest and most colorful.
- Schefflera Compacta — small dense shiny green leaves, H80 cm. The fullest in volume.
- Schefflera Amate — large shiny solid green leaves, majestic habit, H100 cm. The most imposing.
If you want to start with the Schefflera family, the Charlotte offers the best balance between accessible size, simple care, and immediate decorative foliage.
Exposure & location
The Schefflera Charlotte naturally grows under tropical canopy — it replicates this behavior indoors and adapts very well to rooms without direct light. To make the most of its location, check out our guide on plants suited for each room.
- Ideal exposure: soft indirect light to partial shade — east or north-facing window, or room away from windows.
- Tolerates: low-light corners, offices without direct natural light.
- Avoid: direct sun that burns the foliage, drafts, and temperature shocks.
- Temperature: 18–26 °C, not dropping below 15 °C.
- Substrate: well-draining — universal potting soil with clay pellets at the bottom of the pot.
Each plant is unique: foliage density and shoot vigor naturally vary depending on light and season.
Watering & care
The Schefflera tolerates slight underwatering better than overwatering — the finger test is the most reliable guide to adjust frequency according to the season.
- Watering: moderate — water when the surface of the substrate is dry.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer; every 2 weeks in winter.
- Water: room temperature water; tolerates tap water well.
- Drainage: essential — pot must have drainage holes, empty saucer after watering.
- Fertilizer: liquid green plant fertilizer diluted by half, every 4 weeks in spring-summer; stop in autumn-winter.
- Repotting: when roots grow out of the pot, in spring, into a slightly larger container.
Each plant is unique: watering frequency naturally varies depending on pot size, ambient temperature, and season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The shiny umbrella-shaped foliage of the Schefflera Charlotte immediately adds a structured tropical touch. It fits equally well in a minimalist interior or an urban jungle arrangement. For more pairing ideas, check out our tips to create a tropical atmosphere.
- In an urban jungle arrangement: pair it with a climbing Philodendron and a Monstera for a trio of textures — the umbrella-shaped foliage of the Schefflera acts as a pivot between the large cut leaves and the trailing stems.
- On a desk or workspace: its compact and balanced habit makes it an excellent office plant — slip it into a Capi Nature Groove Taupe pot for a matte, contemporary look.
- Shape contrast: pair it with a Sansevieria to play on the verticality of ribbon leaves against the roundness of the umbrellas — an effective graphic contrast without color competition.
- Decorative pot and color scheme: the deep glossy green of the foliage stands out especially well against a natural Selin basket — the natural fiber creates a warm contrast with the plant’s shine and anchors it in a bohemian or Scandinavian style.
Verdeia tips
- Rotate the pot regularly: Schefflera naturally grows toward the light — turning it a quarter turn every 2 to 3 weeks ensures a balanced shape on all sides and prevents an asymmetrical habit.
- Prune in spring to thicken: light pruning of overly long stems above a node in March-April stimulates lateral shoots and keeps a compact, bushy habit that is much more decorative.
- Dust regularly to maintain shine: the glossy leaflets accumulate dust that clogs stomata and dulls their shine — a damp cloth every 3–4 weeks is enough to restore their brightness.
