Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Senecio scaposus and Senecio herreianus? Senecio scaposus has upright leaves covered with a silvery white fuzz, while Senecio herreianus has round leaves shaped like small green beads on trailing stems — two completely different shapes and textures.
How do you preserve the silvery fuzz on Senecio scaposus? Always water directly into the soil without ever wetting the leaves, and handle the plant as little as possible — the fuzz does not grow back where it has been damaged by water or contact.

🌿 Dense and velvety silvery white down • ☀️ Direct sunlight • 💧 Almost no watering • 🌱 Ultra easy • 🐾 Toxic to pets
Native to the rocky arid regions of South Africa, the Senecio scaposus is a rare succulent whose fleshy leaves are completely covered with a dense silvery white down — a natural adaptation that reflects intense sunlight and reduces evaporation in its original habitat. This velvety coating gives it a frost- or snow-like appearance that is absolutely unique in the plant world. Discover our full cactus and succulents collection and our original and rare plants.
Which Senecio variety to choose?
Three Senecio varieties are available in our catalog, each with a distinct silhouette and foliage:
- Senecio scaposus (this plant) — upright fleshy leaves covered with dense silvery white down, compact habit (H15 cm | Pot Ø10.5 cm). The rarest and most spectacular version.
- Senecio herreianus — round leaves shaped like small translucent green beads, trailing stems (H20 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The graphic trailing version.
- Senecio cephalophorus 'Ruby Slippers' — fleshy leaves with reddish hues, compact habit (H15 cm | Pot Ø10.5 cm). The warm-toned version.
Light & location
Senecio scaposus is a sun-dependent succulent — the brighter the light, the denser and more radiant its silvery down. In shade, the leaves lose their shine and stretch out.
- Light: direct sunlight for several hours a day or intense bright light.
- Ideal: south-facing windowsill, bright veranda, balcony or terrace in warm seasons.
- Temperature: 15 to 30 °C — tolerates heat but is sensitive to frost.
- Substrate: very well-draining — special cactus and succulent mix (cactus soil, perlite, sand).
Watering & care
Its silvery down is also its main vulnerability: water in direct contact with the foliage damages it irreversibly. Always water at the base, directly into the substrate — mastering succulent watering is key to preserving this delicate species.
- Watering: very low — allow the substrate to dry completely between waterings.
- Frequency: every 3 to 4 weeks in spring-summer, once a month or less in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and very well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: perfectly tolerates dry air — no need for misting.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer, diluted liquid fertilizer for succulents.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
- Windowsill arrangement: pair it with a Senecio herreianus trailing plant and an Aloe paradisicum — three compact succulents with radically different textures (silvery down, green beads, geometric rosette) on the same sunny sill.
- Solo highlight: placed alone in a Lago cream pot, its silvery down creates a striking contrast with the warm ceramic background.
- Fixed location: choose a permanent, well-lit spot where the plant won’t be handled — the silvery down is damaged by touch and does not regrow.
Verdeia tips
- Never water the foliage: the silvery down is irreversibly damaged by water — always water directly into the substrate, carefully avoiding the leaves.
- Handle as little as possible: the down does not regrow where it has been touched — when repotting every 2 to 3 years, hold the pot rather than the plant.
- Drastically reduce watering in winter: once a month is more than enough during dormancy — root rot most often occurs during this period, identifying early symptoms allows timely intervention.

FAQ – Everything to know before adopting your Verdeia plant
How are my plants prepared before shipping?
All our plants are selected from our European partner nurseries. Before shipping, they are watered, cleaned, and protected with breathable, secure packaging. Each package is designed to ensure your plant arrives in perfect health, without any transport-related stress.
Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Shipping is done within 48 business hours, with tracked delivery within 2 to 5 business days. Delivery costs €5.60 — free for orders over €50. You will receive a tracking link as soon as the package is shipped.
What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
Can I return a plant?
Since plants are living beings, standard returns are not possible. However, we guarantee good health upon delivery: if the plant arrives damaged, it will be replaced free of charge. For any other cases (order error, decorative pot, accessory), returns are possible within 14 days.
