How do you propagate a Senecio herreianus? Cut a stem 8 to 10 cm long, let the cut heal for 2 to 3 days in open air, then plant it in dry soil and wait 10 to 15 days before the first watering to encourage rooting.

🌿 Trailing translucent oval pearls • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Very low watering • 🌱 Very easy
Native to South Africa, the Senecio herreianus is a rare trailing succulent with thin stems adorned with small, translucent light green fleshy oval leaves — slightly more elongated and pointed than the round pearls of its cousin Senecio rowleyanus, giving it an even more graphic and delicate look. Its stems can reach several dozen centimeters for an airy, minimalist cascading effect, among the most original in our indoor succulents collection and our trailing plants.
Which Senecio variety to choose?
Three Senecio varieties are available in our catalog, each with a distinct silhouette:
- Senecio herreianus (this plant) — trailing stems decorated with small pointed light green oval pearls (H20 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The most delicate and graphic version.
- Senecio scaposus — upright fleshy leaves covered with dense silvery white fuzz, compact habit (H15 cm | Pot Ø10.5 cm). The rarest and most spectacular upright version.
- Senecio cephalophorus 'Ruby Slippers' — fleshy leaves with reddish hues, compact habit. The warm-toned version.
Light & location
- Light: bright indirect light with a few hours of gentle sun — avoid harsh midday sun that dries out and burns the delicate pearls.
- Ideal: hanging near a bright window, high shelf, east- or west-facing windowsill.
- Temperature: 15 to 25 °C — tolerates cool temperatures down to 10 °C in winter.
- Substrate: very well-draining — special cactus and succulent mix (potting soil, sand, perlite).
Watering & care
- Watering: very low — allow the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Its fleshy pearls store water and easily tolerate neglect — it is one of the most drought-tolerant indoor succulents. Soft stems are the first sign of overwatering.
- Frequency: every 2 weeks in spring-summer, once a month in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and very well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: perfectly tolerates dry air — no need for misting.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer, cactus fertilizer diluted to half strength.
- Pruning: trim overly long stems in spring to encourage branching.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
- Graphic trailing trio: pair it with a Ceropegia woodii with heart-shaped leaves and a Dischidia imbricata with overlapping tiles — three radically different trailing stem textures for a very graphic trailing plant arrangement.
- Hanging: its stems freely cascading from a height of 60 to 80 cm create an airy, minimalist curtain of oval pearls — perfect in a living room corner or near a bright window.
- Ideal pot: matte white ceramic or terracotta to highlight the translucent light green pearls — warm and neutral tones perfectly complement this discreet succulent.
Verdeia tips
- Propagate easily in spring: cut an 8 to 10 cm stem, let the cut dry for 2 to 3 days before planting in dry substrate — propagating plants by cuttings is especially simple with this species.
- Wait for flowers in summer: with good light, Senecio herreianus produces small fragrant white flowers in summer — an unexpected decorative and fragrant bonus for such a discreet succulent.
- Repot rarely: every 2 to 3 years in spring into fresh, very well-draining substrate — excessive repotting unnecessarily stresses this slow-growing species.

FAQ – Everything to know before adopting your Verdeia plant
How are my plants prepared before shipping?
All our plants are selected from our European partner nurseries. Before shipping, they are watered, cleaned, and protected with breathable, secure packaging. Each package is designed to ensure your plant arrives in perfect health, without any transport-related stress.
Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Shipping is done within 48 business hours, with tracked delivery within 2 to 5 business days. Delivery costs €5.60 — free for orders over €50. You will receive a tracking link as soon as the package is shipped.
What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
Can I return a plant?
Since plants are living beings, standard returns are not possible. However, we guarantee good health upon delivery: if the plant arrives damaged, it will be replaced free of charge. For any other cases (order error, decorative pot, accessory), returns are possible within 14 days.
