Frequently asked questions
How often should you water an Aspidistra? Every 2 to 3 weeks in spring and summer and once a month in winter is enough — it’s a plant that tolerates missed waterings well.
Why do Aspidistra leaves become soft? Soft leaves almost always indicate stagnant water buildup at the bottom of the pot — check the drainage and space out watering.

🌿 Glossy dark green foliage • 🌑 Tolerant of deep shade • 💧 Very moderate watering • 🐾 Non-toxic • 🏙️ 2 sizes available
The Aspidistra elatior, nicknamed cast-iron plant, is a robust and elegant plant native to Japan and Taiwan. Its broad, glossy dark green foliage grows in dense clumps from the soil — a graphic, structured presence that enhances the darkest corners without ever failing. It is one of the few plants truly suited to dark entryways and hallways.
Discreet, virtually indestructible, and non-toxic to animals, it is perfectly suited to homes with cats and dogs, among the pet-friendly indoor plants.
Light & placement
The Aspidistra elatior is one of the most shade-tolerant indoor plants. It can handle conditions in which most other plants would fail to survive — a windowless hallway, a dark corner of a living room, or a poorly lit bathroom. Light varies from room to room, which is why it is useful to choose the right plant for each room.
- Light: shade to filtered light — avoid direct sun, which burns and fades the leaves.
- Placement: hallway, entryway, bathroom, living room corner — ideal on the floor or on a low piece of furniture.
- Temperature: 7–24 °C — tolerates unusually low temperatures for a tropical plant.
- Humidity: tolerates dry air without any problems.
Turn the pot a quarter turn every month so the foliage remains even, even in low-light areas where the plant always grows toward the light source.
Watering & care
The Aspidistra much prefers too little water to too much. Let half of the potting mix dry out before watering again — in winter, watering once a month is often enough. This is a plant that adapts to the rhythm of your home without demanding much, and among the most common mistakes with this species, overwatering ranks first.
- Frequency: every 2 to 3 weeks in spring and summer, monthly in winter.
- Drainage: essential — stagnant water at the bottom of the pot softens the leaves and causes root rot.
- Care: wipe the large leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their natural shine.
Soft leaves at the base are almost always a sign of accumulated stagnant water — check the drainage before changing anything about your watering routine.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The Aspidistra's dense, glossy foliage brings a refined, understated plant presence to spaces where few plants survive. Its deep green naturally complements natural materials — dark wood, polished concrete, and rattan.
- Place it on the floor in a dark living room corner, inside the Capi Nature Skin Anthracite pot — the textured anthracite gray enhances the graphic, understated look of the dark green foliage, creating a serene, minimalist arrangement.
- In a poorly lit entryway, pair it with a Zamioculcas ZZ — two shade-loving plants with glossy, upright foliage that complement each other at different heights to dress up a hallway without natural light.
- For a graphic arrangement, place it near a Sansevieria Laurentii — the Sansevieria's vertical, striped form contrasts with the Aspidistra's broad, dense clump, creating a highly effective structured duo in a dark corner.
- On a low, dark wood piece of furniture, place it in the Brussels Round Anthracite pot — the understated matte anthracite pot highlights the natural gloss of the leaves without competing with their deep green color.
Its dense silhouette and deep green color bring a touch of serenity to minimalist interiors — this is a plant that enhances a space without trying to dominate it.
Verdeia tips
- Let the potting mix dry out thoroughly between waterings: insert your finger halfway down the pot — if the mix still feels damp, wait several more days before watering.
- Do not repot too soon: the Aspidistra likes being slightly root-bound and grows very slowly — repotting indoor plants every 3 to 4 years is enough, only when the roots are growing out of the pot.
- Wipe the leaves regularly: a monthly wipe with a damp cloth is enough to maintain their natural shine and remove dust that blocks the stomata in poorly ventilated rooms.

How are my plants prepared before shipping?

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Orders ship within 48 working hours, with tracked delivery in 2 to 5 working days via DPD. Shipping costs and the free-shipping threshold depend on your country — see our delivery page. You receive a tracking link as soon as your parcel leaves.
What should I do when my plant arrives?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What should I do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
Can I return a plant?
Since plants are living beings, standard returns are not possible. However, we guarantee good health upon delivery: if the plant arrives damaged, it will be replaced free of charge. For any other cases (order error, decorative pot, accessory), returns are possible within 14 days.
