Why do the leaves of my Calathea fold up at night?

This is a natural behavior. Calathea and Maranta fold their leaves at dusk — hence their nickname "prayer plants." This nyctinastic movement is controlled by specialized cells that respond to light. It’s a sign of good health.

How can I prevent the leaves from turning brown?

Slightly increase ambient humidity and avoid hard water. Too dry air or irregular watering can cause browning at the edges. Mist daily, use filtered or rainwater, and place on a tray of moist clay pebbles.

Can they be grown in the bathroom?

Yes, provided the room is bright. They love humidity and thrive perfectly in this environment. A bathroom with a window is ideal for these tropical plants that flourish with shower moisture.

Do they need to be repotted often?

Every 12 to 18 months, in spring, to refresh the soil and encourage healthy growth. Repot into a pot 2-3 cm larger with rich, well-draining potting mix. Calathea and Maranta like to be slightly snug.

Are these plants safe for pets?

Yes, they are among the few non-toxic houseplants for cats and dogs. Excellent plants for homes with pets or children. Ingestion may cause minor digestive upset but no serious toxicity.

How often should I water Calathea and Maranta?

Every 3-5 days in summer, 5-7 days in winter. Keep the soil slightly moist at all times without waterlogging. Water when the surface starts to dry. Never let it dry out completely. Use room temperature water, ideally non-calcareous.

What is the difference between Calathea and Maranta?

Different but related genera (Marantaceae family). Maranta: smaller leaves, creeping/spreading habit, herringbone patterns, very pronounced nyctinastic movement, generally more tolerant. Calathea: larger leaves, upright habit, varied patterns (stripes, circles), less pronounced movement, often more demanding. Both fold up in the evening.

Why are the leaves of my Calathea curling?

Lack of water or insufficient ambient humidity. Leaves curl to reduce evaporation surface. Water if soil is dry, increase humidity. Leaves will unfold again within a few hours. Mist regularly.

Which Calathea variety is best for beginners?

Calathea Lancifolia (Rattlesnake): the most tolerant and easiest. Also: Calathea Medallion (classic and sturdy). Avoid Calathea Ornata or White Fusion if you’re a beginner (more demanding). Maranta leuconeura 'Fascinator' is also excellent for beginners.
