Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Yucca stay in front of a window with direct sunlight? Yes, unlike most houseplants, Yucca enjoys direct sunlight and develops a denser shape and more vigorous growth than in indirect light.
Why do the lower leaves of a Yucca turn yellow? It’s a natural process of shedding the oldest leaves — gently remove them by pulling downward to keep a clean shape and a slender silhouette.

🌿 Graphic dark green foliage • ☀️ Sun to bright light • 💧 Very low watering • ✨ Ultra resilient • 🐾 Non-toxic • 🏙️ 4 sizes available
The Yucca, also called Salon Palm, is an architectural plant with a slender woody trunk topped by a rosette of long, rigid, dark green pointed leaves. Its sculptural and structured shape creates a strong vertical line in any interior — a plant presence that doesn’t need constant care to stay spectacular.
Native to the arid regions of Mexico and Central America, it is one of the most resilient plants in the catalog, able to tolerate drought, dry air, and temperature fluctuations without flinching. Its availability in four sizes makes it one of the most versatile structural plants in our no-maintenance selection.
Which variety of Yucca to choose?
The Yucca genus available at Verdeia comes in several distinct sizes and shapes. Here is how the Yucca — Salon Palm fits in:
- Yucca — Salon Palm (this plant) — slender single trunk, structured shape, 4 sizes from H60 to H125 cm. The most versatile.
- Yucca Elephantipes — classic trunk, elegant traditional shape, 4 sizes from H40 to H125 cm. The classic version.
- Yucca 'Tres Cañas' — three trunks, bushy and spectacular shape, H70 cm. The most graphic and generous.
- Yucca 'Maya Tree' — imposing and majestic shape, H80 cm. The most architectural in a unique size.
For maximum impact with minimal care, choose the H125 cm — the difference in presence compared to smaller sizes is immediate, and the Yucca keeps its shape without pruning or staking.
Exposure & location
The Yucca is one of the few large indoor plants that enjoys direct sunlight — unlike most tropicals, it thrives in front of a south-facing window. The more light it receives, the more vigorous its growth and dense its shape. Check out our guide on easy-care plants for urban apartments for more ideas of suitable species.
- Ideal exposure: bright direct to indirect light — south or west-facing window, sunny balcony, conservatory.
- Tolerates: partial shade, a few hours without direct light.
- Avoid: prolonged dark corners that slow growth and soften foliage.
- Temperature: 15–30 °C — one of the most resistant to temperature variations in the catalog.
- Soil: very well-draining — cactus potting mix with perlite or sand.
Each plant is unique: foliage density and trunk height naturally vary depending on light and season.
Watering & maintenance
The Yucca is the most tolerant plant to missed waterings in the catalog after the Sansevieria — its trunk stores enough water reserves to go several weeks without watering. Trunk rot from overwatering is its only real weakness — check our guide on causes of yellowing leaves if you notice warning signs. Rely on the finger test method: the soil must be completely dry before each watering.
- Watering: very low — let the soil dry completely between waterings.
- Frequency: about once every 2 to 3 weeks in spring-summer; once a month in winter.
- Water: room temperature water.
- Humidity: perfectly tolerates dry air — no misting needed.
- Drainage: essential — pot must have drainage holes, saucer emptied after watering.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid cactus fertilizer, every 4 to 6 weeks in spring-summer.
Each plant is unique: watering frequency naturally varies depending on pot size, ambient temperature, and season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The sculptural vertical form of the Yucca structures a space without dominating it — it adds height and movement where many plants stay low. Its low water requirement makes it one of the best options for a living room or office with no maintenance hassle.
- In minimalist dry gardening: pair it with a Sansevieria and an Aloe for a trio of graphic plants sharing the same needs — zero hassle, very decorative contemporary desert effect.
- As a centerpiece in an entryway or living room: the H125 cm size stands alone in a corner — place it in a Capi Nature anthracite decorative pot for a sober, architectural look that lets the plant’s silhouette take center stage.
- In texture contrast: pair it with a Philodendron with large soft leaves — the stiffness of Yucca’s pointed leaves strongly contrasts with the velvety tropical leaves for a very striking graphic duo.
- Decorative pot and color scheme: the deep dark green foliage stands out especially well against a Brussels white decorative pot — a classic contrast that enhances the plant’s vertical silhouette.
Verdeia tips
- Remove yellowing lower leaves: this is a natural process of shedding the oldest leaves — gently pull them down to keep a clean shape and a slender silhouette.
- Rotate the pot monthly: Yucca naturally grows toward the light — monthly rotation ensures a balanced rosette on all sides and prevents an asymmetrical shape.
- Repot only when necessary: like Sansevieria, Yucca prefers a snug pot — wait until roots poke through the bottom before repotting in spring into a slightly larger container.
