🌿 Air-purifying • ☀️ Bright interior / Partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌴 Graphic & contemporary • 📏 H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm • ⚠️ Slightly toxic to pets
The Yucca elephantipes 'Tres Cañas', or Three-Stem Yucca, is a sturdy tropical plant native to Mexico and Central America. Its three woody trunks, topped with long rigid leaves in rosettes, give it a sculptural silhouette that’s instantly recognizable — a strong plant presence that shapes a space as soon as it’s placed.
Among the most resilient indoor plants, it tolerates missed waterings, adapts to varied light levels, and helps purify the air. An architectural choice for living rooms, offices, and entryways seeking character — keep out of reach of pets and young children, as its pointed leaves can cause injury. For more on large indoor plants, see our dedicated guide.
Exposure & placement
The Yucca elephantipes is a sun-loving plant native to the semi-arid regions of Mexico. Indoors, it thrives in light but can adapt — one of its great strengths.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light, near a south- or west-facing window.
- Tolerates: partial shade — but growth will be slower and leaves less dense.
- Avoid: prolonged direct sunlight through a window, which can scorch the leaves.
- Temperature: 15–25 °C, minimum 10 °C. Very sensitive to cold drafts.
- Soil: well-draining — light universal potting mix with 30% sand or perlite.
The brighter its location, the more its three stems will develop evenly. Below 2 hours of light per day, it will survive but barely grow.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — wait until the top 5 centimeters of soil are dry before watering.
- Frequency: about every 8–10 days in summer, every 3–4 weeks in winter.
- Water: preferably use non-calcareous water (filtered or left to settle). Yucca is sensitive to hard water.
- Drainage: essential — pot must have drainage holes, saucer emptied after watering.
- Fertilizer: every 6–8 weeks in spring and summer, diluted green plant fertilizer at half strength.
- Repotting: every 2–3 years in spring, into a slightly larger pot.
The Yucca stores water in its trunks — this is its natural reserve. It’s much better to underwater than overwater: roots rot quickly in soggy substrate. Check out our new plant care guide to get off to a good start.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its three trunks and architectural foliage, the Yucca 'Tres Cañas' is above all a plant sculpture. It doesn’t need to be surrounded to make an impact — placed alone in a bright corner, it’s enough to transform a room.
- Alone as a centerpiece: in a large waxed concrete or matte ceramic pot, it stands as a plant sculpture in a living room or entryway. See our inspirations in our selection of decorative foliage plants.
- In arrangement: pair it with a Ficus lyrata or a Strelitzia for a contrast of shapes and heights. Add a Zamioculcas at the base to thicken the bottom.
- Ideal pot: matte ceramic, concrete, or natural terracotta — raw materials highlight its clean lines better than colorful or shiny pots.
- Style: perfect in a minimalist, Scandinavian, or urban jungle interior. Its three stems give it a volume that a single-stem plant cannot match.
Turn the pot a quarter turn each week: the three stems naturally grow toward the light, and this regular rotation ensures a balanced shape on all sides.
Verdeia Tips
- Never overwater — the trunks naturally store water. A constantly wet substrate causes the roots to rot without visible signs until it's too late.
- Beware of lime scale — white spots or gradual yellowing are often due to tap water. Use filtered water or water left to stand for 24 hours.
- Watch out for mealybugs — white cottony filaments in the leaf axils? Treat immediately with alcohol on cotton, then diluted black soap.
- Remove yellowing lower leaves — this is natural. Cut at the base with a clean cut: this gives the characteristic palm look and encourages upward growth.
- Let it readjust after delivery — 48 hours in a temperate room before placing it in its final spot. The cold/heat shock can cause leaf drop.
- ⚠️ Slightly toxic and sharp leaves — toxic if ingested by dogs and cats, and its tips can cause injury. Keep it out of reach of pets and young children. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
