Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the leaves of my Yucca turning yellow at the base? Yellowing of the lower leaves is often normal — Yucca naturally loses its lower leaves as it grows, simply remove them at the base of the trunk.
Can an indoor Yucca be placed on the balcony in summer? Yes — it enjoys warmth and full summer sun, but gradually acclimate it outdoors over a week to avoid leaf burn and bring it back inside as soon as temperatures drop below 12 °C.

☀️ Sun / Partial shade • 🌿 Graphic sword-shaped foliage • 💧 Light watering • 🏙️ Sculptural, structured form • 📏 H80 cm | Decorative pot Ø19 cm
The Yucca elephantipes 'Maya Tree', also known as the indoor Yucca, is an iconic plant native to the dry regions of Mexico and Guatemala — recognizable by its thick stem resembling a trunk and its long sword-shaped leaves that give it an immediately identifiable architectural silhouette. Discover our entire collection of large indoor plants and our XXL plants guide to integrate it perfectly into your space.
Easy to care for and tolerant of missed waterings, it thrives in light while requiring little attention — a rare quality for a plant of this size.
Exposure & Location
Yucca elephantipes enjoys bright spots with soft sunlight or bright indirect light. It fits well in a bright living room or an office near a bay window.
- Exposure: full sun to partial shade — bright indirect light ideal, tolerates direct sun.
- Ideal for: bright living room, office, entryway, near a bay window or glass roof.
- Temperature: 18 to 28 °C, avoid cold drafts.
- Substrate: well-drained, slightly sandy or green plant potting mix mixed with perlite.
Watering & Care
- Watering: light — once every 8 to 10 days in summer, much less in winter. Let the substrate dry almost completely between waterings.
- Drainage: essential — Yucca dislikes excess water more than dryness.
- Fertilizer: in spring and summer, once every 6 to 8 weeks, balanced fertilizer.
- Care: remove dry leaves at the base of the stem to keep a clean silhouette.
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years into a slightly larger pot with good drainage.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
Its slender silhouette and stiff foliage make it an ideal corner plant — placed in a living room corner, it adds height to the room without taking up floor space.
- In a structured arrangement: pair it with a Sansevieria Laurentii and a Dracaena marginata — three plants with vertical, graphic forms, similar low watering needs, a coherent and hassle-free trio.
- In a larger version: discover the standard Yucca elephantipes for an even more impressive visual impact in large spaces.
- Decorative pot: a terracotta or matte ceramic pot in sand or terracotta tones enhances the plant’s arid and natural look.
Verdeia Tips
- Water less than you think: an overwatered Yucca develops root rot that is often irreversible — wait until the top 5 centimeters of substrate are completely dry before watering.
- Rotate the pot monthly: so light reaches all sides evenly and growth stays symmetrical.
- Reduce watering in winter: keep it near a bright window and water once every 3 to 4 weeks — our winter care guide explains how to support your plants during this period.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
