Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Ficus binnendijkii 'Amstel King' and 'Alii'? 'Amstel King' has thinner leaves and a more drooping, airy habit, while 'Alii' has slightly wider leaves and a more upright, imposing habit.
Why is my Ficus binnendijkii 'Amstel King' losing its leaves? Leaf drop is almost always linked to a change of location, a cold draft, or a sudden temperature change — a normal stress reaction that stops as soon as conditions stabilize.

🌿 Long deep glossy lance-shaped leaves • 🌳 Airy and elegant tree-like habit • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🚀 Fast growth • 🩴 2 sizes available • 📏 H70 cm or H75 cm | Pot Ø17 cm
The Ficus binnendijkii 'Amstel King', also called Willow fig or Long-leaf fig, displays long narrow lance-shaped deep glossy green leaves that gracefully wave along slender branches. A horticultural hybrid derived from botanical species of tropical Southeast Asia, this variety with an airy tree-like habit is among the most elegant indoor Ficus in the catalog.
Its distinctive feature compared to other Ficus: foliage made of long narrow lance-shaped leaves, and an airy habit that contrasts with Ficus with broad leaves like elastica or lyrata. This graphic silhouette brings a light exotic touch and faster growth than the average Ficus. Available in two compact sizes to fit in a corner or on a console.
Which Ficus species to choose?
The Ficus genus includes species with very different shapes and foliage — here are the main ones in the catalog:
- Ficus binnendijkii 'Amstel King' (this plant) — long narrow lance-shaped deep green leaves, elegant airy habit (2 sizes: H70 or H75 cm | Pot Ø17 cm). The most graphic and airy version.
- Ficus binnendijkii 'Alii' — sister variety with even narrower leaves, taller and more branched habit (H80 cm | Pot Ø21 cm). The slimmest version of the binnendijkii type.
- Ficus lyrata (Fiddle-leaf fig) — large thick lyre- or violin-shaped leaves, deep glossy green. The most iconic version of contemporary design.
- Ficus elastica 'Robusta' (Rubber plant) — large thick oval leaves, glossy dark green. The most robust and easiest to care for version.
- Ficus benjamina 'Danielle' (Weeping fig) — small oval leaves on drooping branches, flexible and light habit. The version with the finest and densest foliage.
- Ficus benghalensis 'Joy' (Indian Banyan) — thick oval leaves with white-veined undersides, strong trunk. The most exotic and sculptural version.
- Ficus microcarpa 'Ginseng' (Bonsai) — spectacular aerial roots exposed on the surface, small tender green leaves. The most compact and zen version.
Exposure & location
The Ficus 'Amstel King' prefers bright indirect light to maintain the shiny brilliance of its foliage. It tolerates some filtered sun in the morning or late afternoon, but prolonged direct sun burns the narrow leaves. Too little light slows growth and thins the foliage.
- Exposure: bright indirect light — sheer curtain window facing east or west, or 1 to 2 meters from a south-facing bay window with a filtering curtain.
- Location: living room, office, bright entrance, bedroom — away from radiators and drafts.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C — minimum 15 °C in winter, dislikes sudden changes.
- Soil type: rich, light, and well-draining — universal potting soil for green plants mixed with perlite or bark.
Turn the pot a quarter turn every two weeks so all branches receive equal light — the Ficus grows quickly toward its light source and can become asymmetrical.
Watering & maintenance
The Ficus 'Amstel King' prefers a slightly moist substrate during the growing season, without ever soaking the root ball. Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes with this species and causes leaf drop and widespread yellowing.
- Watering: moderate — let the top 2 to 3 cm of the substrate dry out between waterings, about once a week in spring and summer, less often in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes, clay pebbles at the bottom, always empty the saucer.
- Humidity: prefers 50 to 60% humidity — mist the leaves once a week, especially in winter during heating.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted by half, every 2 to 3 weeks from March to September.
- Pruning: pinch branch tips in spring to thicken foliage and maintain a balanced shape.
- Moving: minimize it — the Ficus hates being moved and often reacts with partial leaf drop while adapting.
Dust the leaves with a soft damp cloth once a month — clean foliage captures light better and maintains the bright shine characteristic of lance-shaped leaves.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its airy form and long lance-shaped leaves, the Ficus 'Amstel King' adds a light, graphic exotic touch. To create a relaxing green corner, it pairs with other tropical plants with broader leaves to multiply contrasts.
- For a contrast of broad and narrow leaves, pair it with a Ficus elastica 'Robusta' with shiny dark green oval leaves — the rubber plant adds mass and stability, while the Amstel King brings lightness and movement, forming a very complementary Ficus duo.
- For a trio of graphic tropical foliage, surround it with a Calathea Makoyana with stained-glass patterns and a Philodendron 'Imperial Red' with deep red leaves — three textures and three palettes that interact without overlapping.
- To structure a bright corner, add a Strelitzia Nicolai with large paddle-shaped leaves — the columnar tree-like form of the Strelitzia complements the airy silhouette of the Ficus in a vertical tropical composition.
- To enhance the slender silhouette, slip the pot into a Elho Brussels Anthracite decorative pot — the matte anthracite highlights the bright green of the long leaves and creates a clean, contemporary atmosphere.
The Amstel King works perfectly as a single specimen on a console or low piece of furniture, where its long leaves cascade over the surface — its airy habit does not overwhelm the space like broad-leafed Ficus.
Verdeia tips
- Choose its location before delivery: all Ficus dislike being moved and often respond with partial leaf drop while adapting to their new environment. Decide on its permanent spot upon arrival to avoid this avoidable stress.
- Pinch tips in spring: cut the last 2 to 3 centimeters of branches at the start of the growing season to encourage branching and maintain a dense, balanced shape — the Amstel King tends to grow tall without this intervention.
- Watch for leaf drop: slight basal leaf drop is normal, especially during seasonal changes. Massive leaf drop, however, indicates a problem with watering, light, or drafts — check these three factors before any other diagnosis.
