Frequently Asked Questions
How do you grow a trailing Virginia creeper? Place it in a hanging pot or on a high shelf in partial shade and water regularly in spring and summer. The stems grow quickly — prune in early spring to control length and encourage bushiness.
Why do the leaves of my Virginia creeper turn red in autumn? This is a natural and normal phenomenon — the breakdown of chlorophyll in autumn reveals the red and orange pigments present in the leaves. The color intensity is stronger with good light exposure.

🌿 Small, light, and airy palmate leaflets • 🍂 Bright autumn colors • ☀️ Partial shade to gentle sun • 💧 Moderate watering • ❄️ Hardy • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Parthenocissus striata, or Trailing Virginia creeper, is a climbing and trailing plant native to South America. Its flexible stems bear small tender green palmate leaflets that create a light, airy cascading effect — when hanging or on a high shelf, its stems elegantly trail down to form a natural green curtain. In autumn, its foliage turns bright red, orange, and purple before falling. H15 cm | Pot Ø15 cm.
Hardy, deciduous, non-toxic. Discover it in our selection of trailing plants.
Which variety of Parthenocissus to choose?
The Parthenocissus genus comes in several distinct habits and foliage types:
- Parthenocissus striata trailing (this plant) — small palmate leaflets, trailing cascading habit, compact size. The most airy and delicate.
- Parthenocissus tricuspidata — three-lobed leaves, very vigorous climbing habit, H65 cm. The most classic and powerful.
- Parthenocissus henryana — silver variegated leaves, elegant climbing habit, H65 cm. The most graphic.
- Parthenocissus quinquefolia 'Engelmannii' — 5-lobed leaves, vigorous climbing habit, H65 cm. The most classic.
Exposure & location
- Ideal exposure: partial shade to gentle sun — indirect or morning light.
- Tolerates: gentle sun, urban pollution.
- Avoid: scorching afternoon sun in midsummer.
- Hardiness: down to -10 °C — can stay outside year-round.
- Substrate: rich, deep, and well-drained.
- Ideal : hanging, high shelf, partial shade balcony.
When hanging, its stems develop a spectacular trailing habit over the months — the longer they grow, the more impressive the cascade effect. See our light and humidity guide to find the right spot.
Watering & care
- Watering : moderate — keep the substrate moist but not soaked.
- Frequency : 1 to 2 times per week in spring-summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage : pot with drainage holes required.
- Pruning : prune lightly to control stem length and maintain the desired shape.
- Fertilizer : liquid fertilizer for green plants, once a month in spring-summer.
- Winter : deciduous plant — loses its leaves after the autumn show and regrows vigorously in spring.
Don’t worry if the plant loses all its leaves in winter — this is perfectly normal. Check out our winter plant care guide to prepare it well.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its cascading habit and autumn colors make it a plant that is both decorative all year round and spectacular in fall.
- Hanging : its trailing stems create a light and airy green curtain — the effect intensifies as the stems grow longer. Find our hanging plants in our hanging plants collection.
- In combination : pair it with a Hedera helix Ivy for a trailing plant duo — the evergreen ivy keeps greenery in winter when the Parthenocissus is bare.
- Style : natural, bohemian, rustic — its delicate little leaflets blend well in all organic interiors.
Its autumn colors are especially intense in sunny exposure — a well-lit spot enhances the fiery display in October-November.
Verdeia tips
- Allow space for the stems — Parthenocissus striata is vigorous and its stems grow quickly. When hanging, leave at least 50 cm of space below for a generous cascading effect.
- Prune in early spring — before growth resumes, shorten stems if needed. This is the ideal time to control length and density. Check our care calendar for the right actions by season.
- Leaf drop in winter is normal — this is a deciduous plant. Keep the plant outdoors or in a cool place during dormancy — cold is necessary for spring regrowth.
