Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the needles of my Cupressus turning brown? Overwatering is the most common cause — let the soil dry out slightly between waterings and make sure the pot has drainage holes. Too dry air in a heated apartment or a spot without enough light can also cause this symptom.
Does the Cupressus Goldcrest Wilma really smell like lemon? Yes — its foliage releases a fresh lemon scent when brushed against or when its needles are gently pinched. This is one of the most appreciated features of this variety.

✨ Bright golden foliage with a lemon scent • 🌲 Compact, conical, structured shape • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌱 Slow growth • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Cupressus macrocarpa 'Goldcrest Wilma', or Golden Cypress, is a compact conifer native to California. Its fine yellow-green golden needles form a dense, structured conical shape — a bright architectural silhouette that brings warmth and verticality to any space. When you brush its foliage, it releases a characteristic fresh lemon scent. H60 cm | Pot Ø14 cm.
Non-toxic, slow growing, and low maintenance. Discover it in our sunny balcony plant selection.
Exposure & Location
- Ideal exposure: sun to partial shade — bright light is essential to maintain the golden color.
- Avoid: deep shade, which causes the foliage to turn green and dull the golden color.
- Hardiness: down to -5 °C — protect the base during severe frost.
- Indoors: very bright south- or west-facing window — without bright light, the foliage loses its golden glow.
- Substrate: well-drained, universal potting soil with perlite or conifer potting mix.
The brighter the light, the more intense the golden color. In insufficient light, new shoots gradually turn green. Check our light and humidity guide to find the best spot.
Watering & Care
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist without ever soaking it.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in spring and summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: pot must have drainage holes — excess water causes needles to yellow.
- Fertilizer: diluted conifer fertilizer, once a month in spring and summer.
- Pruning: lightly pinch the tips in spring to maintain a compact, dense shape.
Overwatering is the main risk — yellowing needles starting from the inside almost always indicate too frequent watering. See our diagnostic guide to quickly identify any issues.
Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
Its golden conical shape adds verticality and light — an effective architectural contrast in any plant arrangement.
- At the entrance: two Cupressus on either side of a door or access create an elegant, structured green framing effect.
- In arrangements: pair it with an Olive tree or a Lavender Hidcote Blue for a very coherent Mediterranean composition — similar needs, complementary aesthetics.
- Ideal pot: white ceramic, zinc, or terracotta — neutral tones highlight the golden color without competing with it.
Its lemon scent is released on contact — place it where you will often pass by to enjoy this sensory dimension. Find more Mediterranean plants in our urban Mediterranean garden selection.
Verdeia Tips
- Bright light is essential — this is the sine qua non condition to keep the golden color. Partial shade is suitable, but full sun gives the most intense colors.
- Never soak the substrate — allow it to dry slightly between waterings. In winter, significantly reduce watering — the plant is almost dormant.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — the Cupressus Goldcrest Wilma is safe for dogs and cats. See our plants and pets guide for more pet-friendly ideas.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
