Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the leaves of my Sansevieria Mikado soft? Soft leaves almost always indicate the start of root rot due to overwatering. Remove the plant from its pot, cut away the black and soft roots, let it dry for 48 hours in open air before repotting in fresh, well-draining soil.
Can Sansevieria Mikado live outdoors? It can spend the summer outdoors in a bright spot without intense direct sunlight, but it must be brought inside before autumn — it cannot tolerate frost or prolonged temperatures below 10 °C. Outdoors, reduce watering even more as rain may be sufficient.

🌿 Fine slender cylindrical leaves • 🎨 Architectural and graphic habit • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • 💧 Very low watering • 🌬️ Air-purifying
The Sansevieria cylindrica 'Mikado', also called Mother-in-law's Tongue, is a succulent indoor plant native to the arid regions of West Africa. Its fine slender cylindrical leaves grow vertically like mikado sticks — a unique architectural habit, both airy and sculptural, bringing a touch of contemporary design and graphic verticality to any space.
Air-purifying, nearly indestructible, available in two sizes: H40 cm | Pot Ø12 cm and H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm. Discover them in our complete Sansevieria collection and in our selection of bedroom plants.
Which Sansevieria variety to choose?
The Sansevieria genus offers a great diversity of shapes and sizes — here are the varieties available in our catalog:
- Sansevieria cylindrica 'Mikado' (this plant) — fine slender cylindrical leaves, architectural airy habit. The unique minimalist graphic version.
- Sansevieria 'Fernwood Mikado' — more compact and dense cylindrical leaves. The compact cylindrical version.
- Sansevieria 'Futura Superba' — short wide leaves, golden yellow edges. The compact variegated version.
- Sansevieria zeylanica — long narrow leaves with zebra patterns, slender habit. The elegant classic version.
- Sansevieria 'Laurentii' — long leaves with bright yellow edges, imposing vertical habit. The timeless iconic version.
- Sansevieria 'Moonshine' — light silver-green flat leaves, bright compact habit. The modern silver version.
- Sansevieria 'Black Coral' — very dark green flat leaves, dark graphic habit. The dark and elegant version.
- Sansevieria 'Straight' — straight and rigid leaves, strict and clean vertical habit. The classic architectural version.
Why choose the Mikado? Its airy habit and ultra-slim cylindrical leaves create a verticality and lightness effect that no other Sansevieria replicates — a statement plant for fans of minimalist design.
Exposure & placement
The Sansevieria Mikado is extremely tolerant — it adapts to almost any light condition, from full sun to shade. The brighter the light, the more vigorous the growth.
- Exposure: sun to partial shade — tolerates shade, but growth will be slower.
- Ideal for: office, living room, bedroom, entryway, or any bright space.
- Temperature: 15 to 30 °C — tolerates fluctuations, avoid frost.
- Substrate: very well-draining — cactus and succulent soil with perlite or sand.
Its cylindrical leaves create a spectacular play of shadows and light — especially visible with side lighting in the evening.
Watering & care
Overwatering is the only real way to kill a Sansevieria Mikado. Always wait until the substrate is completely dry before watering — if in doubt, wait another week. Our watering guide explains how to develop this habit.
- Watering: low — let the substrate dry out completely between waterings.
- Frequency: about once every 2 to 3 weeks in spring-summer, once a month in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and very well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: tolerates dry air — no misting needed.
- Fertilizer: every 6 to 8 weeks in spring-summer with diluted liquid cactus fertilizer.
In winter, monthly watering is enough — or even less if the plant is in a cool spot. Roots rot much faster in cold seasons.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its airy habit and slender cylindrical leaves add verticality and lightness — it structures a space without ever cluttering it.
- In combination: pair it with a Zamioculcas or a Beaucarnea for a graphic and easy-to-care-for arrangement — same needs, same contemporary aesthetic.
- Ideal pot: a Mayk plomb pot Ø20 cm for the large H70 variant — its matte lead gray shade elegantly contrasts with the slender cylindrical leaves.
- Atmosphere: perfect as a statement plant on an entry console, windowsill, or as an architectural accent in a minimalist living room.
The large H70 cm variant creates a spectacular plant column effect in a room corner — a living sculpture that requires almost no maintenance.
Verdeia tips
- Overwatering is its only real danger — always wait until the substrate is completely dry before watering, check by inserting your finger up to 3 cm deep. A Sansevieria Mikado can easily go 3 to 4 weeks without water in winter with no problem.
- Ideal for bedrooms — like all Sansevieria, it produces oxygen at night through crassulacean photosynthesis and removes certain indoor air pollutants. Our analysis on plants and air quality details this phenomenon.
- Propagate by division when repotting — every 2 to 3 years in spring, gently separate the shoots that appear at the base. Each division will root easily in a new pot with well-draining substrate.
- The cylindrical leaves lean slightly — this is natural and part of the sculptural charm of this variant. A pronounced lean with soft leaves, however, signals early root rot from overwatering.
