Frequently asked questions
What to do when the Guzmania's bract loses its color? Remove the faded bract — the mother plant will gradually decline but will produce offsets at its base that can be repotted separately to bloom in turn.
How long do Guzmania bracts last? The bracts remain colorful for several weeks, sometimes several months depending on conditions — sufficient indirect light and non-limestone water in the rosette extend their lifespan.

🐾 Non-toxic • 🌸 Long-lasting vibrant colorful bracts • 🌤️ Indirect light / Partial shade • 💧 Watering in the rosette • 📏 H45 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
The Guzmania 'Ostara' is a tropical bromeliad native to the humid forests of South America — its glossy green foliage forms an elegant rosette, at the heart of which emerges a colorful inflorescence in vibrant tones that can last for several months. Like all bromeliads, it is watered mainly in the center of the rosette. Pair it with tropical plants and flowering indoor plants.
Its long-lasting bloom and easy care make it a popular indoor gift all year round, a perfect idea for giving a plant.
Light & placement
Guzmania 'Ostara' thrives in bright light without direct sun — intense sunlight quickly fades its bracts. It also grows very well in partial shade in a living room, bright bathroom, or office.
- Light: indirect light to bright partial shade — an east- or north-facing window is ideal.
- Ideal for: table, console table, windowsill, bright bathroom.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C, protected from cold drafts.
- Potting mix: orchid potting mix or a light, well-draining blend — bark, coconut fiber, perlite.
Watering & care
- Watering in the rosette: pour a little soft water directly into the center of the rosette — this is the technique specific to bromeliads, which absorb water through their leaves. Empty and refill the water in the rosette every 10 days to prevent stagnation. Its water and humidity needs are similar to those of plants in a tropical setting.
- Watering the potting mix: moderate — water when the surface of the potting mix begins to dry.
- Humidity: enjoys a slightly humid atmosphere — mist the foliage in summer.
- Fertilizer: once a month, diluted in the watering water during spring and summer.
- After flowering: remove the faded bract — new offsets will appear at the base.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its graphic vertical shape and colorful bracts make it an ideal accent plant — it brings color and movement to a composition of uniform green foliage. The most cohesive pairings bring together plants that flower during the same period, according to the flowering calendar.
- In a bromeliad collection: pair it with Vriesea 'Elan' and Tillandsia LED — three bromeliads, three silhouettes, and three very different expressions of the family, with the same watering approach.
- In a tropical setting: pair it with Calathea Medallion and Maranta Leuconeura — three tropical plants with graphic foliage, with Guzmania's colorful bracts as the focal point.
- Decorative pot: a matte light-colored ceramic decorative pot or a natural-fiber pot highlights the colorful bracts without competing with them.
Verdeia tips
- Water the center, not the potting mix: Guzmania absorbs water mainly through its leaves — pour soft water into the central rosette every week and keep the potting mix only slightly moist otherwise.
- Empty the rosette regularly: replace the water in the center of the rosette every 10 days to prevent stagnation, which can cause the center of the plant to rot.
- Keep the offsets after flowering: the mother plant flowers only once and then declines — the offsets at the base are new plants ready to bloom; repot them separately in spring.
