🍊 Small edible orange fruits • 🌸 Fragrant white flowers • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • 💧 Regular watering • 🌿 Evergreen foliage • ⚠️ Toxic to dogs and cats
The Citrus Calamondin, also called the Apartment Orange Tree, is a spectacular miniature citrus known for its small bright orange edible fruits, delightfully fragrant white flowers, and glossy evergreen foliage. This Mediterranean plant produces small, very decorative orange fruits — naturally tangy and bitter but usable in cooking (juice, marinades, jams) — that add a touch of cheer and authenticity to your terrace, balcony, or bright indoor space.
Originating from the Philippines and Southeast Asia, the Calamondin is a natural hybrid between mandarin and kumquat, cultivated for centuries for its decorative fruits and enchanting fragrance. Unlike the classic lemon tree, it is more compact, more floriferous, and perfectly suited to bright indoor cultivation — the ideal citrus for apartments and small spaces. Also discover our selection of fruit and aromatic plants.
Which Citrus variety should you choose?
The Citrus genus offers several citrus fruits suitable for container growing. Here’s how the Citrus Calamondin compares to other varieties:
- Citrus Calamondin (this plant): compact and very decorative citrus, small tangy and bitter orange fruits (usable in cooking), abundant flowering, ideal for bright indoor spaces or balconies. The easiest to grow in an apartment.
- Citrus Lemon: classic lemon tree, standard-sized yellow lemons, generous yield, prefers sunny outdoor conditions. More demanding in terms of light.
The Calamondin is the ideal choice if you’re looking for a compact citrus that blooms and fruits in an apartment without hassle — much more accommodating than the classic lemon tree.
Exposure & location
The Citrus Calamondin is one of the few citrus fruits able to thrive indoors in bright light all year round.
- Exposure: full sun to partial shade — minimum 4 to 6 hours of light per day.
- Ideal location: in front of a south- or west-facing window, conservatory, sunny balcony, or terrace.
- Temperature: 15 to 25 °C year-round, minimum 10 °C in winter.
- Soil: special citrus potting mix, rich and well-drained.
In summer, take it out to the balcony or terrace — it loves the heat and will produce more flowers and fruits. Bring it inside as soon as nights drop below 10 °C.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular — keep the soil slightly moist without ever soaking it, especially during fruiting.
- Frequency: 2 to 3 times a week in summer, reduce in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes, empty the saucer after each watering.
- Humidity: mist the foliage regularly indoors to recreate Mediterranean humidity.
- Fertilizer: every 2 weeks in spring and summer with a special citrus fertilizer rich in nitrogen and iron.
- Pruning: light pruning at the end of winter to maintain a compact and airy shape.
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot.
Water stress is the number one enemy — irregular watering causes fruit drop. Water regularly and fertilize: citrus plants are hungry. Also check out our guide to welcoming your new plant.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
With its bright orange fruits and fragrant white flowers, the Calamondin instantly creates a Mediterranean atmosphere on a balcony or in a bright interior.
- In a pot: stunning in a terracotta pot or a white glazed ceramic — the color of the fruits stands out even more against a light or natural background.
- On a balcony: pair it with aromatic herbs (rosemary, thyme, basil) to create an edible and fragrant Mediterranean corner — perfect for our balconies and terraces selection.
- Indoors: place it alone near a bay window to make it the centerpiece — its orange fruits are enough to brighten up a space.
- In arrangements: pair it with a potted olive tree and lavender for a cohesive Mediterranean urban garden without complex care.
Fruits stay on the plant for several months — you can enjoy their decorative color long after harvest.
Verdeia advice
- Light above all — it’s the number one factor. Without enough light, no flowers, no fruits.
- Fertilize regularly — a special citrus fertilizer every 2 weeks in spring and summer makes all the difference.
- Regular watering — avoid dry/waterlogged cycles that cause fruit drop.
- Manual pollination — indoors, help pollination by brushing dry from flower to flower.
- Watch for pests — scale insects and aphids favor citrus plants. Treat quickly with black soap.
- ⚠️ Toxic to dogs and cats — place the plant out of their reach. See our plants and pets guide for non-toxic alternatives.
