Frequently Asked Questions
How do I care for a potted lemon tree in winter? Bring it indoors as soon as temperatures drop below 5 °C, to a very bright place like a sunroom or near a large south-facing window. Reduce watering by half and stop fertilizing until spring.
Why is my lemon tree not producing fruit? The two main causes are lack of sunlight (less than 6 hours per day) and lack of fertilization. A lemon tree that doesn’t receive special citrus fertilizer regularly puts all its energy into foliage at the expense of fruit.

🍋 Edible yellow fruits • 🌸 Fragrant white flowers • ☀️ Full sun • 💧 Regular watering • 🌿 Evergreen foliage • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H80 cm | Ø22 cm
The Citrus limon, also called Lemon tree, is a Mediterranean fruit shrub native to the subtropical regions of Asia, cultivated for millennia for its juicy yellow lemons and delightfully fragrant white flowers. At 80 cm tall, it produces standard-sized fruit from the first season under good conditions — a plant both decorative and productive, perfect for a sunny balcony or south-facing terrace.
Non-toxic, evergreen foliage, flowers that attract pollinators. Discover it in our fruit and aromatic plants collection and in our Mediterranean plants selection.
Which Citrus variety should you choose?
The Citrus genus offers two varieties in our catalog, with very distinct characters:
- Citrus limon (Lemon tree) (this plant) — standard-sized yellow lemons, generous production, elegant habit H80 cm. The classic productive version for balconies and terraces.
- Citrus × microcarpa (Calamondin) — small, decorative, tangy orange fruits, very floriferous, compact habit. The miniature ornamental version, perfect for small spaces.
Why choose the Citrus Lemon? If you’re looking for a truly productive lemon tree with standard-sized lemons for cooking or making lemonade, this is the right choice. Its fruits are larger and juicier than the Calamondin.
Exposure & location
The Citrus limon is a Mediterranean plant that loves the sun — the more it gets, the more fruit it will produce. This is its number one need.
- Exposure: full sun, minimum 6 to 8 hours per day.
- Ideal: south-facing balcony or terrace, sunny urban garden, very bright veranda.
- Temperature: 15 to 30 °C in summer — bring indoors to a bright spot as soon as temperatures drop below 5 °C in winter.
- Substrate: rich and well-drained — citrus potting soil with compost.
In winter, a spot near a very bright bay window is suitable — avoid radiators that dry the air and stress the foliage.
Watering & care
The lemon tree has consistent needs — a substrate that is constantly moist but never waterlogged. The finger test remains the most reliable method, especially during fruiting when water stress causes fruit drop.
- Watering: regular — keep the soil slightly moist without soaking.
- Frequency: 2 to 3 times per week in summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and a saucer.
- Humidity: prefers 50 to 60% humidity — mist the foliage in summer.
- Fertilizer: every 2 weeks in spring and summer with a special citrus fertilizer rich in nitrogen and iron. Check our fertilization guide to optimize fruiting.
- Pruning: light pruning at the end of winter to maintain a compact and airy shape.
Citrus trees are hungry — without regular fertilization, fruit production quickly decreases and leaves yellow from deficiency.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
With its bright yellow lemons and fragrant white flowers, the lemon tree brings an authentic and productive Mediterranean touch to any sunny terrace.
- Pairing: combine it with an Olive tree and a Rosemary on stem to create a Mediterranean triptych — same light, same care, guaranteed southern vibe.
- Ideal pot: a large white Elho Greenville pot Ø30 cm with built-in drainage — essential for citrus trees that need good drainage and space for their roots.
- Atmosphere: perfect on a south-facing balcony or terrace — its fruits and flowers transform an ordinary space into a productive Mediterranean garden.
Lemons ripen slowly (6 to 9 months) — enjoy watching them change from green to bright yellow throughout the season.
Verdeia advice
- Sunlight is its sine qua non condition — without at least 6 hours of direct sun per day, fruiting will be very limited or nonexistent. A south or southwest-facing balcony is ideal. A north-facing or very shaded balcony is not suitable for this plant.
- Watch out for scale insects and aphids — potted citrus trees are particularly vulnerable, especially late winter when the plant is weakened after the cold season. Treat quickly with diluted black soap at the first signs to prevent an infestation that would compromise fruiting.
- Manual pollination boosts production — use a fine brush to transfer pollen from flower to flower, especially if the plant is indoors or on a sheltered balcony. A simple action that can double the number of fruits produced.
- Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring — citrus trees need space for their roots to produce abundantly. Check our repotting guide to prepare the process properly.
