Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Dianthus 'Pink Kisses' be grown indoors? Dianthus is an outdoor plant that requires full sun and fresh air; indoors, it becomes leggy and flowers little, so it’s better placed on a balcony or south-facing windowsill.
How to extend the flowering of Dianthus 'Pink Kisses'? By regularly removing faded flowers and lightly cutting back the clump in mid-summer, the plant produces a second wave of flowers until the first frosts.

💖 Bright pink bicolor flowers with a purple eye • 🌸 Generous flowering all summer • 🌿 Persistent gray-green foliage • ☀️ Full sun • 🌡️ Very hardy • 📏 H40 cm | Pot Ø17 cm
Dianthus 'Pink Kisses', also called Sweet William carnation, is a compact perennial carnation with double bicolor flowers: bright vivid pink highlighted by a magenta purple eye at the heart of each petal. Native to Southern Europe, the species Dianthus caryophyllus here produces a particularly flowering cultivar, ideal for balconies and outdoor flowering plants in the catalog.
Its specialty: a dense clump with persistent gray-green foliage, continuously producing dozens of fragrant spikes from May until the first frosts. A perfect perennial to gift, which carries a true symbolic meaning in the language of flowers.
Exposure & Location
The 'Pink Kisses' carnation is a full sun plant, essential to support continuous flowering. It prefers poor, well-drained soils and above all fears stagnant moisture in winter, which causes it to decline.
- Exposure: full sun essential — minimum 6 hours of direct sun per day for generous flowering.
- Location: sunny balcony, windowsill, planter, border, or rock garden — its compact size is perfect for small spaces.
- Temperature: very hardy, tolerates prolonged negative temperatures — protect the pot more from excess winter moisture than from the cold itself.
- Soil type: draining, neutral to slightly alkaline, poor to moderately fertile — definitely no heavy or waterlogged soil.
Dianthus hates acidic soils: if your soil is neutral to acidic, add a teaspoon of wood ash or some crushed limestone to the planting mix to raise the pH and encourage flowering.
Watering & Care
The 'Pink Kisses' carnation is a very water-efficient plant, perfectly tolerating drought once established. Overwatering is its main enemy — the finger test in the substrate remains the most reliable method to check the right time to water.
- Summer watering: moderate, about 1 to 2 times per week in a pot as soon as the substrate surface is completely dry.
- Winter watering: very reduced or stopped — Dianthus hates having its roots in cold water.
- Drainage: essential — always empty the saucer after watering, add a layer of clay pellets at the bottom of the pot.
- Fertilization: diluted flowering plant fertilizer, every 6 to 8 weeks from April to August — no more, Dianthus does not like overly rich soils.
- Maintenance: regularly remove faded flowers by hand or with pruning shears — this stimulates continuous new flower growth.
- Pruning: lightly cut back the clump at the end of summer to maintain a compact shape and encourage autumn flowering.
'Pink Kisses' Dianthus is a short-lived perennial — after 2 to 3 years, it naturally weakens and flowers less; take cuttings in June or divide it in spring to easily renew the clump.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
With its compact habit, continuous flowering, and persistent gray-green foliage, 'Pink Kisses' Dianthus brings color and fragrance to all small outdoor spaces — it naturally fits into mixed planters, borders, and sunny rock gardens.
- For a fragrant Mediterranean scene, pair it with a Lavandula Hidcote Blue and a Rosmarinus officinalis on stem — all three plants share the same needs for full sun and draining soil, and their scents blend harmoniously.
- For a romantic pink-themed planter, place it alongside a Light pink dwarf rose — the bright bicolor flowers of Dianthus converse with the soft petals of the rose in a tender pink to magenta palette, very feminine.
- To highlight the bright pink flowers, plant it in a Elho Greenville Easy Balcony White planter Ø25 cm — the light background makes the bright pink and purple eye of the flower centers stand out without any color competition.
- For a soft tonal note, choose a Elho Jazz Round Lavender Lilac decorative pot Ø19 cm — the lilac tone creates a delicate chromatic harmony with the magenta pink and gray-green foliage for an elegant monochrome scene.
Plant it along a path edge or at the front of a planter: its low, dense foliage elegantly covers the base of taller plants while releasing its fragrance when brushed.
Verdeia Tips
- Regularly cut faded flowers: continuously removing spent flowers stimulates new spike growth and extends flowering until frost — a quick weekly task from April to October.
- Prefer dry soil in winter: Dianthus tolerates dry cold well but hates stagnant moisture in winter — shelter the pot from rain under an awning, or tilt it slightly to facilitate water runoff.
- Take cuttings to renew it: Dianthus weakens after 2 to 3 years — take non-flowering stem cuttings in June and plant them in a sand-soil mix, following the complete cutting guide to get new free plants in a few weeks.
