Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Gasteria Hybrid 'Aurora' bloom indoors? Yes, with good lighting it produces flower stalks bearing the tubular red-orange flowers characteristic of the Gasteria genus — blooming usually occurs in spring or summer on plants a few years old.
How do you propagate a Gasteria Hybrid 'Aurora'? Take the small side rosettes that the plant regularly produces at its base, with their roots if possible, and repot them separately in a very well-draining substrate — this is the simplest and most effective method for this species.

🌿 Dark green rosette dotted with creamy white spots • ☀️ Indirect light to partial shade • 💧 Rare watering • 🌱 Ultra easy • 🐾 Non-toxic
Native to South Africa, the Gasteria Hybrid 'Aurora' is an intergeneric hybrid resulting from crosses between Gasteria and Aloe — its upright dark green triangular leaves, dotted with small creamy white spots arranged in irregular lines, form a very compact and perfectly symmetrical rosette. Its Latin name comes from gaster (stomach), referring to the shape of its tubular flowers. It is one of the most original succulents in our cactus and succulent collection and our original and rare plants.
Which graphic succulent to choose?
The Gasteria Hybrid 'Aurora' belongs to a group of compact succulents with very distinct silhouettes:
- Gasteria Hybrid 'Aurora' (this plant) — rosette of upright dark green triangular leaves dotted with creamy white spots, very compact habit (H15 cm | Pot Ø11 cm). The most graphic and original version.
- Aloe paradisicum — geometric gray-green rosette with fine teeth, very regular compact habit (H15 cm | Pot Ø10.5 cm). The most symmetrical and architectural version.
- Aloe 'Spider' — rosette of slender, elongated bright green leaves, star-shaped habit (H15 cm | Pot Ø10.5 cm). The version with the finest leaves.
- Senecio scaposus — upright leaves covered with dense silvery white fuzz, compact habit (H15 cm | Pot Ø10.5 cm). The rarest and most spectacular version.
- Mix of 6 assorted cacti — six different succulents for a varied composition. The ideal version to start a collection.
Light & location
- Light: bright indirect light to partial shade — unlike most succulents, Gasteria tolerates partial shade well and avoids intense direct sun that burns its leaves.
- Ideal: office, shelf, east- or north-facing windowsill, bright bathroom.
- Temperature: 15 to 25 °C — tolerates fluctuations but is sensitive to frost.
- Substrate: very well-draining — special cactus and succulent mix (cactus soil, perlite, sand).
Watering & care
- Watering: very low — let the substrate dry out completely between waterings. Its fleshy leaves store reserves for several weeks — mastering succulent watering is the only real skill required for this species.
- Frequency: every 2 to 3 weeks in spring-summer, once a month in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage hole and very well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: perfectly tolerates dry air — no misting needed.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer, diluted liquid fertilizer for succulents.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
- Office trio: pair it with an Aloe paradisicum and an Aloe 'Spider' — three compact rosettes of the same size but very different silhouettes (upright white spots, gray-green geometric rosette, fine star-shaped leaves) for a graphic office composition without demanding watering.
- With Senecio: pair it with a Senecio scaposus with silvery white fuzz — the dark green spotted Gasteria and the velvety white Senecio create a striking texture contrast at the same size.
- Ideal pot: matte white ceramic or terracotta to highlight the dark green and creamy white spots — neutral tones bring out the foliage’s graphic pattern without competing with it.
Verdeia tips
- Don’t hesitate to choose a partial shade location: it’s one of the few succulent hybrids that prefers filtered light over direct sun — perfect for offices and shelves away from windows.
- Propagate for free by collecting side shoots: Gasteria regularly produces small rosettes at its base — take them with their roots and repot separately to get new plants.
- Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring: its slow but steady growth eventually exhausts the substrate — repotting into a slightly larger container with fresh, very well-draining substrate revives the rosette’s vigor.
