Frequently Asked Questions
How to grow ivy denser and bushier? Regularly prune overly long stems—cut just above a leaf node. Each cut stimulates the growth of 2 to 3 new side shoots. Without pruning, ivy produces long, sparse stems. With regular pruning every 2-3 months, it becomes dense and lush.
Is Hedera ivy toxic to cats and dogs? Yes, ivy contains irritating saponins that are toxic if ingested by cats and dogs. Keep it out of reach of your pets. When hung high, it is naturally less accessible—this is a practical advantage of its trailing habit.

🌿 Shiny dark green foliage • 🎋 Cascading trailing habit • ☀️ Partial shade to indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🪴 White hanging pot included • ⚠️ Toxic to pets
The Hedera Helix 'Groen', or Trailing Ivy, is a climbing plant with a trailing habit and flexible stems that gradually lengthen to create a cascading effect. Its shiny dark green foliage with classic lobed leaves is one of the most recognizable among houseplants. Delivered with its white hanging pot — ready to hang with no extra accessories needed.
Low-light tolerant, air-purifying, and fast-growing — it is one of the most versatile plants in our hanging and trailing plants selection. Note: toxic if ingested by pets.
Which Ivy variety to choose?
Each Hedera has a distinct profile — solid green, variegated, or graphic foliage, trailing or climbing habit. Here are the available profiles:
- Hedera Helix 'Groen' with white hanging pot (this plant) — shiny dark green foliage, white hanging pot included, ready to hang. The most turnkey solution.
- Hedera helix — classic dark green foliage, H65 cm size, without hanging pot. The versatile climbing or trailing version.
- Hedera helix 'Goldheart' — green and golden yellow variegated leaves at the center. The brightest.
- Hedera algeriensis 'Gloire de Marengo' — large tricolor leaves in green, gray, and cream. The most sophisticated.
- Hedera colchica 'Dentata Variegata' — very large green and cream variegated leaves. The most imposing.
Other varieties are available in our climbing plants collection — including the Pittsburgh with deeply lobed leaves.
Exposure & placement
The Hedera Helix 'Groen' is one of the most low-light tolerant trailing plants — a valuable asset for hanging baskets in dimly lit spaces.
- Ideal exposure: partial shade to soft indirect light — north- or east-facing window, hallway, bright bathroom.
- Tolerates: low light, cool temperatures (10–21 °C) — less demanding than most tropical plants.
- Avoid: intense direct sunlight that burns leaves and dries out stems.
- Soil: light universal potting mix with perlite.
Ivy prefers cool rooms — a temperature between 15 and 18 °C suits it perfectly and even slows the spread of its main pests (red spider mites).
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — keep the soil slightly moist without ever soaking it.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in spring and summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: the included white hanging pot has drainage holes — empty the saucer after watering.
- Humidity: occasionally mist the foliage, especially in dry conditions.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid green plant fertilizer, once a month in spring and summer.
- Pruning: regularly trim overly long stems to maintain a compact shape and encourage branching.
Ivy is sensitive to red spider mites in dry, warm environments — regular misting and a cool location are the best prevention. Check our complete watering guide to adjust frequency by season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
When hanging, the Hedera Helix 'Groen' creates a cascading plant effect that enlivens vertical spaces often overlooked in interior decor.
- Hanging: hang it near a north- or east-facing window — its stems will lengthen and gradually hang down to create a curtain of leaves.
- In vertical arrangements: pair it with a Pothos or a Scindapsus hanging plant for a suspended green wall with complementary foliage.
- Pot included: the white hanging pot fits all styles — minimalist, Scandinavian, bohemian. No additional accessories needed.
Its stems can reach 100 to 150 cm over time — a plant that evolves and transforms from one season to the next.
Verdeia Tips
- Prune regularly to thicken — without pruning, ivy produces long, sparse stems. Regular pruning of overly long stems encourages branching and creates a denser, bushier habit.
- Watch for red spider mites — this is the main risk for ivy indoors, especially in summer heat and dryness. They appear under leaves (fine webbing, orange spots). Mist regularly and place in a cool spot to prevent.
- Acclimate upon delivery — 48 hours in a temperate room before hanging in its final location. See our new plant welcome guide to get started right.
- Can climb with a support — if you prefer a climbing habit over trailing, attach its stems to a trellis or stake — it will naturally cling.
- ⚠️ Toxic to pets and humans — contains irritating saponins. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs, and young children. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
