Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Hedera colchica and Hedera helix? Hedera colchica has larger, less deeply lobed, and thicker leaves than Hedera helix — the 'Dentata Variegata' variety is distinguished by its sharply contrasting cream edging on dark green leaves much larger than common ivies.
Does the 'Dentata Variegata' ivy climb on its own? Yes, its rootlet holdfasts allow it to cling by itself to rough stone, brick, or concrete walls — it does not attach to smooth surfaces like glass or painted metal.

🌿 Large dark green leaves edged with cream • 🌑 From full sun to deep shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 🌱 Evergreen all year • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Hedera colchica 'Dentata Variegata', or variegated Persian ivy, is an evergreen climbing or trailing plant native to the Caucasus and Western Asia. Its large dark green leaves bordered with a bright cream edge create an elegant and natural contrast, decorative all year round on walls, balconies, and terraces.
Its main feature: it adapts to all exposures, from full sun to deep shade, where few decorative climbers thrive.
Light & location
Hedera colchica 'Dentata Variegata' is one of the most adaptable plants in the catalog — it grows in sun, partial shade, and deep shade without losing its variegated foliage. Its aerial roots allow it to climb rough walls on its own or to trail gracefully from a high planter or low wall.
- Exposure: all exposures — sun, partial shade, deep shade.
- Location: wall, pergola, railing, balcony, hanging pot, or ground cover.
- Hardiness: very hardy — withstands cold and urban conditions well.
- Foliage: evergreen and ornamental all year round.
Note: in intense full sun, the variegated foliage is brighter but may suffer from summer sunburn — a bright partial shade is the exposure that best reveals the dark green and cream contrast.
Watering & care
Hedera colchica is very undemanding — water regularly in pots, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings; it becomes almost self-sufficient in the ground. Light pruning in spring thickens the foliage and controls growth. Stem cuttings root easily at any time of year.
- Watering: regular in pots, spaced out in the ground — tolerates drought once established.
- Pruning: light in spring to thicken and control growth.
- Maintenance: very easy — occasional leaf cleaning is enough to maintain the variegated brightness.
- Drainage: essential in pots — avoid stagnant water.
If leaves yellow out of season, check two things: excess water in pots, or a spot that is too dark, which gradually dulls the variegation and weakens the plant.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The green and cream variegated foliage of Hedera colchica naturally brightens shaded areas and creates an evergreen decorative backdrop for seasonal flowering plants.
- For a bright evergreen backdrop under a deciduous climber, pair it with Parthenocissus henryana — the silvery and purple foliage of Parthenocissus in summer and its autumn blaze contrast with the cream variegation of Hedera that dresses the wall in winter.
- For a shaded wall with complementary variegations, the Hedera algeriensis 'Gloire de Marengo' with larger green and creamy white variegated leaves complements Dentata Variegata — two evergreen ivies with similar foliage but different textures and sizes.
- To enliven the base of a wall in winter, the evergreen Lonicera henryi creates a dense dark green backdrop that highlights the cream edging of Hedera colchica — two very hardy evergreen climbers for a wall covered all year round.
- For a contrast of evergreen foliage, the Hedera helix 'Goldherz' with small bright green and gold leaves creates a contrast in size, shape, and color with the large green and cream leaves of Dentata Variegata — a very graphic ivy duo.
Verdeia tips
- Prune lightly every spring to thicken the foliage: without pruning, stems lengthen and the base of the wall gradually thins out — an annual cut in March-April stimulates lateral branching and maintains a dense, compact green wall.
- Ensure perfect drainage in pots: despite its robustness, Hedera colchica does not tolerate standing water at the bottom of the pot, which causes root rot — clay pebbles at the bottom and a well-draining substrate are essential in containers.
- Take advantage of its ease of propagation: take 15 to 20 cm stems with a few leaves and plant them directly in moist substrate — they root in a few weeks at any time of year, unlike most climbers.
