Frequently Asked Questions
How do I care for a large hanging ivy? Regularly trim the tips of the stems to encourage branching and keep a dense shape. Water once a week, keeping the soil slightly moist. Mist occasionally to prevent spider mites, especially in dry conditions.
Is ivy toxic to cats and dogs? Yes, ivy contains irritating saponins and is toxic if ingested by cats and dogs. Its hanging, elevated form naturally makes it less accessible — a practical advantage for homes with pets.

🌿 Green and golden cream variegated foliage • 🎋 Long XXL trailing stems • ☀️ Partial shade to indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 Stems H60 cm | Pot Ø24 cm • ⚠️ Toxic to pets
The Hedera Helix 'Gold Child' is a variegated ivy with grayish-blue green foliage edged in golden cream — brighter and more decorative than classic green ivy. This XXL size with a 24 cm diameter pot develops long, generous trailing stems that create a spectacular cascading effect. Delivered in its hanging pot, ready to hang.
Tolerant of low light, air-purifying, vigorous growth. Note: toxic to pets. Discover it in our selection of hanging and trailing plants.
Which Ivy variety to choose?
Each Hedera has a distinct profile — solid or variegated foliage, compact or XXL size:
- Hedera Helix 'Gold Child' XXL (this plant) — green and golden cream variegated foliage, pot Ø24 cm, long trailing stems. The brightest and most generous.
- Hedera Helix 'Groen' with white hanging pot — classic dark green foliage, compact size D17 cm. The most understated.
- Hedera Helix 'Goldheart' — green variegated leaves with a golden yellow heart, D15 x H65 cm. The most contrasting.
- Hedera algeriensis 'Gloire de Marengo' — large tricolor leaves in green, gray, and cream. The most sophisticated.
- Hedera colchica 'Dentata Variegata' — very large green and cream variegated leaves. The most imposing.
The Gold Child XXL is the perfect choice for dressing a large vertical space — its long, generous trailing stems create an immediate cascading effect that compact sizes can’t replicate.
Exposure & location
- Ideal exposure: partial shade to indirect light — north- or east-facing window.
- Variegation: the brighter the light (without direct sun), the more pronounced the golden cream edging. In too much shade, the foliage tends to turn green again.
- Temperature: 10–21 °C — prefers cool rooms.
- Space: its 24 cm pot and long stems require space below the hanging point — allow at least 80 cm of free height.
The golden cream variegation of Gold Child is more visible in a well-lit spot — unlike green ivy which tolerates full shade, Gold Child needs a minimum of light to keep its golden highlights. See our hanging plants vs XXL guide to choose the right size.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — keep the soil slightly moist without ever soaking it.
- Frequency: once a week in spring and summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: empty the saucer after watering.
- Humidity: mist occasionally, especially in dry air — prevents red spider mites.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, once a month in spring and summer.
- Pruning: regularly trim overly long stems to maintain a dense shape and encourage branching.
Large-format ivy is sensitive to red spider mites in warm, dry environments — a cool location and regular misting are the best prevention. Check our problem diagnosis guide to quickly identify and treat issues.
Decor ideas
The XXL size of the Hedera 'Gold Child' creates a strong plant presence — its trailing stems generously dress vertical spaces.
- In a large room: hung near a window, its long stems hang down up to 60 cm, creating a very decorative curtain of variegated leaves.
- In combination with other hanging plants: pair it with plants that have more subdued foliage — green Pothos, Scindapsus — to highlight its golden variegation by contrast.
- In an entryway or hallway: hung high, it enlivens often overlooked passage areas without taking up floor space.
Its golden cream highlights catch the light and brighten partially shaded spaces — one of the few variegated foliages that gains presence even without direct light.
Verdeia tips
- Prune to thicken — without pruning, XXL ivy produces very long, sparse stems. Regular trimming of the tips stimulates branching and maintains the dense, generous growth typical of the XXL size.
- Watch for red spider mites — they appear under leaves in heat and dryness. Mist regularly and place in a cool spot to prevent them. See our common mistakes guide to avoid usual pitfalls.
- Variegation fades without light — if new leaves come out completely green, move the plant closer to a light source. The golden edge naturally returns with more brightness.
- ⚠️ Toxic to pets and humans — ivy contains irritating saponins. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs, and young children. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
