Never had a plant before and don’t know where to start? This selection is made for you. Each species here was chosen for one criterion: it forgives mistakes. Forgetting to water, imperfect light, variable temperature — these plants handle it all and stay beautiful.
The top 5 plants to start with
Pothos (Scindapsus/Epipremnum) grows anywhere, in any conditions, and only needs watering when you remember. Zamioculcas (ZZ plant) survives weeks of total neglect. Sansevieria tolerates shade, dryness, and even the dry air from heating. Chlorophytum (spider plant) is so vigorous it produces baby plants on its own. And Pilea peperomioides is compact, decorative, and easy — the ultimate Instagram plant. Read our complete guide to getting started with plants.
Discovery packs: start without thinking
Don’t want to choose one by one? Our boxes and sets are designed for that. The Set of 4 essential green plants is the ideal starter pack. The Surprise Boxes of 5, 6, 8, or 10 plants offer variety and surprise with every opening. And the Box of 4 easy-care plants is specifically made up of hardy species. Explore our collection of indoor plant packs.
The 3 mistakes to avoid when starting out
Overwatering is mistake #1 — more plants die from drowning than from drying out. When in doubt, wait. Choosing a plant too demanding for its conditions (a Calathea in a dry, dark living room, for example) is mistake #2. And neglecting drainage (no hole at the bottom of the pot, stagnant water in the saucer) is mistake #3. Our article 10 common mistakes and how to avoid them will save you many disappointments. Also check out our complete watering guide.
Which plant for which space?
Bright window: almost anything works, but a Ficus Elastica or a Syngonium will give quick results. Dark room: Zamioculcas, Sansevieria, or Aglaonema without hesitation. Small space: Peperomia, Pilea, or Syngonium Pixie. Office: Sansevieria or Zamioculcas, indestructible even on weekends and holidays. Our guide indoor plants for every room helps you find the right match.
Learn the basics over time
The advantage of starting with easy plants: you learn to observe the signals (soft leaves = thirsty, yellow leaves = too much water, pale leaves = lack of light) without pressure. Once you master watering and light exposure, you’ll be ready for more demanding species. Check out our yellow leaves guide: causes and solutions, our article on choosing the right pot, and our month-by-month care calendar.
