Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the leaves of my spider plant have brown tips? Brown tips almost always indicate water that is too hard or air that is too dry — switch to filtered or rested water (left to sit for 24 hours) and occasionally mist the foliage.
Can the spider plant live in a low-light room? It tolerates partial shade better than most variegated plants, but its green and white variegation gradually fades — bright indirect light is needed to keep the stripes sharp and contrasting.

🌿 Green and white ribbon-like foliage • 🌀 Airy trailing habit • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🐾 Non-toxic • 🏙️ 3 sizes available
The Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum', also known as the Variegated Spider Plant, originates from South Africa. Its long, soft green ribbon-like leaves edged in creamy white cascade lightly and airily, creating a highly decorative natural movement. Its stolons - long, slender stems bearing plantlets - give the plant its characteristic spider-like silhouette. It is suitable for households with pets and is among the pet-safe indoor plants.
One of the easiest plants for city dwellers - resilient, quick to propagate, and adaptable to many locations.
Light & placement
Chlorophytum enjoys bright indirect light but tolerates partial shade better than most variegated plants. The brighter the light, the more defined and contrasting the white stripes become - in overly dark conditions, the foliage loses its variegation and turns uniformly green. The balance between light and humidity is particularly important for maintaining the vibrancy of the variegation.
- Light: bright indirect light to partial shade - avoid direct sun, which can burn the fine leaves.
- Placement: shelf, tall piece of furniture, hanging planter, or bright windowsill.
- Temperature: 15–27 °C, away from cold drafts.
- Humidity: tolerates dry indoor air but appreciates occasional gentle misting.
When hung, the stolons trail freely and the characteristic spider-like silhouette is fully revealed - the ideal location for appreciating the plant's dynamic form.
Watering & care
Chlorophytum 'Variegatum' is highly tolerant of missed waterings - its fleshy roots store water and allow it to withstand periods of drought without damage. Keep the substrate slightly moist without overwatering. Watering indoor plants should be adjusted to the season: more frequent in summer and much less frequent in winter.
- Frequency: once a week in summer, every 2 weeks in winter.
- Water: use non-calcareous water or water that has been left to stand - limescale causes brown tips.
- Care: remove dry leaves at the base and cut off the stolons if you want to limit propagation.
- Propagation: take a plantlet with its roots and replant it directly in fresh substrate - the simplest of the plant propagation techniques.
Brown leaf tips almost always indicate air that is too dry or water that is too calcareous - increase ambient humidity and switch to filtered or rested water.
Decorating ideas & plant combinations
Chlorophytum's trailing green and white ribbon-like foliage creates a natural, airy movement that energizes plant arrangements. Its lightness works equally well in contemporary and Bohemian interiors.
- In a hanging planter, place it in the white hanging pot Ø17 cm - the pot's neutral white highlights the trailing foliage's green and white ribbons, creating a light and luminous arrangement for a kitchen or living room.
- On a high shelf, place it in the white textured decorative pot Ø13,5 cm - the pot's raised texture contrasts with the linear, trailing foliage for a graphic, natural look.
- For a suspended duo arrangement, pair it with an Epipremnum Golden Pothos - the Pothos's heart-shaped green and yellow foliage contrasts with Chlorophytum's variegated ribbons for a highly dynamic two-plant display.
- For a plant shelf, pair it with a Syngonium Maria - Syngonium's pink and copper tones warm up Chlorophytum's green and white, creating two complementary silhouettes in a soft tropical style.
Verdeia tips
- Propagate easily from stolons: take a plantlet that already has roots at the end of a stolon and plant it directly in a small pot of moist substrate - it will root within a few weeks without any special treatment.
- Use non-calcareous water: brown tips are almost always caused by limescale or dry air - switch to filtered or rested water for 24 hours before watering to maintain flawless foliage.
- Repot as soon as the roots outgrow the pot: Chlorophytum grows quickly and develops abundant fleshy roots - repot every 2 years in spring in a well-draining universal substrate with clay pebbles at the bottom.
