Parthenocissus – Virginia creeper, self-clinging climber for facades and walls
Parthenocissus, or Virginia creeper, is the essential climber for quickly covering a wall, facade, or fence. Self-clinging — it needs no support or guidance — it attaches itself to almost any surface. Every autumn, it puts on a spectacular display of reds, oranges, and purples before shedding its leaves.
Self-clinging: no installation hassle
The great strength of Parthenocissus lies in its tendrils equipped with adhesive discs that allow it to cling on its own to any surface: bricks, concrete, wood, stone. No trellis, no cables, no ties — it climbs by itself and covers several square meters in just a few seasons. Find all our climbing and groundcover plants for more vertical greening ideas.
A unique autumn spectacle
Discreet in summer with its dense, fresh green foliage, Parthenocissus transforms dramatically in autumn. Its leaves turn carmine red, bright orange, or deep purple depending on the species — a plant display that leaves no one indifferent. It is the most spectacular deciduous climber for an urban wall or facade. Also discover our plants for balconies and terraces to complete your outdoor greenery.
Growing tips
- ☀️ Exposure: full sun to shade — adapts to almost any orientation
- 🌱 Soil: any well-drained soil, even poor — very undemanding
- 💧 Watering: low once established, very drought-resistant
- ✂️ Pruning: late winter to control spread, or after leaf fall
- 🏗️ Support: none needed — clings by itself thanks to natural suction cups
- ❄️ Hardiness: very hardy down to −20 °C, ideal for all temperate climates
Frequently asked questions
Does Virginia creeper damage walls?
On walls in good condition, Parthenocissus does not harm the structure. However, its suction cups can leave marks on painted or weakened facades. Avoid installing it on walls with masonry joints in poor condition.
Does Virginia creeper grow in the shade?
Yes, that is one of its great qualities — it adapts equally well to full sun or full shade. Autumn colors are more intense in sunny exposure. For other plants suited to low-light areas, check out our plants for low light collection.
How long does it take to cover a wall?
Virginia creeper is a vigorous climber: it can cover several square meters by the second or third year. Growth is faster in rich soil and sunny exposure.
Is Virginia creeper toxic?
Its berries are slightly toxic if ingested. Its leaves and stems can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals — wear gloves when pruning.
