Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Sansevieria Straight grow in a room without windows? It tolerates low light better than almost any other houseplant, but a room with no natural light at all will slow its growth and may cause the leaves to gradually stretch out.
Why are the leaves of my Sansevieria soft at the base? Softening at the base of the leaves almost always indicates root rot caused by overwatering — reduce watering immediately and check that the pot drains properly.

🌿 Upright striped leaves • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • 💧 Very little watering • 🏙️ Structured graphic form • 📏 H40 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
Sansevieria Straight, also known as mother-in-law's tongue, is a timeless houseplant known for its rigid, vertical leaves striped with light and dark green, creating an immediate graphic effect. One of the hardiest plants in our Sansevieria collection.
Native to the tropical regions of West Africa, Sansevieria trifasciata 'Straight' naturally grows in arid, rocky areas where it stores the water in its succulent leaves. Its exceptional tolerance for neglect makes it one of the most recommended easy-care plants for city dwellers — ideal for beginners or low-light interiors.
Which Sansevieria variety should you choose?
The Sansevieria genus offers a wide variety of shapes and colours — here's how Sansevieria Straight differs from the other varieties in the catalogue:
- Sansevieria Straight (this plant) — upright dark green leaves striped with light green, with a classic, graphic form (H40 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The timeless striped version.
- Sansevieria 'Moonshine' — elegant, luminous silvery green upright leaves (H40 cm | Pot Ø14 cm). The most luminous and sophisticated version.
- Sansevieria Zeylanica — upright leaves with spectacular silver marbled patterns (H55 cm | Pot Ø14 cm). The most graphic marbled version.
- Sansevieria Laurentii — upright green leaves edged in golden yellow, a classic. The best-known golden version.
- Sansevieria 'Black Coral' — upright, very dark green, almost black leaves (H35 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The darkest and most spectacular version.
- Sansevieria 'Whitney' — dark green leaves edged in silver, with a compact form (H27 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The compact and elegant version.
- Sansevieria Fernwood Punk — upright cylindrical leaves and an unusual form (H35 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The compact cylindrical version.
- Sansevieria Spearmint — highly luminous green and white variegated foliage (H55 cm | Pot Ø14 cm). The most luminous variegated version.
Light and placement
Sansevieria Straight tolerates an exceptionally wide range of light conditions — from full sun to near darkness. It is one of the few plants capable of adapting to very low-light rooms without deteriorating.
- Light: bright indirect light to partial shade — it also tolerates low light and moderate direct sun.
- Ideal: desk, living room, east- or north-facing windowsill, entryway.
- Temperature: 16 to 28 °C — avoid areas below 10 °C.
- Substrate: very well-draining mix — cactus and succulent potting soil with sand or perlite.
Turn the pot a quarter turn every 15 days to maintain straight, even growth across all the leaves.
Watering & care
Sansevieria is the plant that best forgives missed waterings — it much prefers being forgotten to being overwatered. The main mistake to avoid is detailed in the 10 most common mistakes: watering without letting the substrate dry out completely.
- Watering: very light — let the substrate dry out completely between waterings.
- Frequency: approximately once every 8 to 10 days in spring and summer, and once every 3 to 4 weeks in winter.
- Drainage: essential — a pot with drainage holes and very well-draining substrate is non-negotiable to prevent root rot.
- Fertilizer: once every 4 to 6 weeks in spring and summer with diluted liquid fertilizer.
- Repotting: only every 3 to 4 years — Sansevieria likes to be root-bound.
Sansevieria prefers to be forgotten — it is better to underwater than overwater, making it the ideal plant for travelers and forgetful plant owners.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
With its strict upright growth and horizontal stripes, Sansevieria Straight adds a strong graphic line to plant arrangements — it naturally contrasts with plants with soft or trailing growth.
- Create a graphic, resilient trio by pairing Sansevieria Straight with a Zamioculcas with glossy, arching stems and a round, delicate Pilea Peperomioides — three very easy-care plants, three contrasting silhouettes for a highly cohesive arrangement.
- Place it on a desk or shelf in the white textured ceramic decorative pot Ø13.5 cm — the matte white highlights the foliage’s horizontal stripes with a clean, sharp contrast.
- Pair it with a Sansevieria 'Black Coral' with almost black foliage and a silver-green Sansevieria 'Moonshine' - three Sansevierias from the same family, three very different palettes (striped / black / silver) in the gray Borneo basket Ø14 cm.
- For a minimalist desk corner, place it alone in the Capi Nature Skin Anthracite Ø14 cm pot - the textured anthracite gray accentuates the graphic, structured look of the striped foliage.
Its strict upright growth creates a striking contrast with trailing plants or plants with broad leaves - pair it with contrasting silhouettes for maximum effect.
Verdeia tips
- Water very sparingly and let it dry out completely: Sansevieria stores water in its leaves - waterlogged substrate causes irreversible root rot much more often than underwatering; when in doubt, wait another week.
- Wipe the leaves once a month: dust is particularly visible on the smooth, striped leaves and dulls the graphic effect - wiping each leaf with a damp cloth instantly restores the stripes' shine.
- Repot only every 3 to 4 years: Sansevieria grows better when root-bound and does not need extra space - wait until the roots emerge from the pot before repotting it in a slightly larger container.
