Frequently Asked Questions
Does Sansevieria really purify the air? The 1989 NASA study showed that Sansevieria absorbs certain volatile compounds like formaldehyde and benzene. The amounts remain modest in a typical apartment — consider it a beneficial complement rather than a substitute air purifier.
Why are my Sansevieria’s leaves soft? Soft, limp leaves almost always indicate chronic overwatering and the start of root rot. Remove the plant from its pot, cut away black and soft roots, let it dry for 48 hours before repotting in fresh, very well-draining soil.

🌿 Graphic dark green cylindrical leaves • 🎨 Compact dense rosette form • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • 💧 Very low watering • 🌬️ Air-purifying • 📏 H35 cm | Ø12 cm
The Sansevieria 'Fernwood Punk', also called Mother-in-law's Tongue, is a compact and graphic succulent plant native to the arid regions of West Africa. Its dark green cylindrical leaves with subtle horizontal stripes grow in a dense, vertical rosette — a minimalist and modern sculptural effect, perfect for a desk, shelf, or contemporary corner.
Air-purifying, nearly indestructible, ideal for low-maintenance spaces. Discover it in our complete Sansevieria collection and in our selection of bedroom plants.
Which Sansevieria variety should you choose?
The Sansevieria genus offers a wide variety of shapes and sizes — here are the varieties available in our catalog:
- Sansevieria 'Fernwood Punk' (this plant) — compact cylindrical leaves, dense rosette form, H35 cm. The miniature sculptural version.
- Sansevieria 'Fernwood Mikado' — slender cylindrical leaves, larger vertical form. The slender and graphic version.
- Sansevieria 'Mikado' — thin, tall cylindrical leaves, spectacular vertical form. The tall and slender version.
- Sansevieria 'Whitney' — short, flat leaves, silver stripes, compact form. The classic compact version.
- Sansevieria 'Moonshine' — light silver-green flat leaves, unique and bright color. The silver version.
- Sansevieria 'Black Coral' — very dark green flat leaves, elegant and dark appearance. The dark and graphic version.
- Sansevieria zeylanica — flat, wide leaves, spectacular silver stripes, imposing stature. The classic XXL version.
Why choose the Fernwood Punk? Its compact size (H35 cm) and cylindrical leaves make it the perfect graphic accent for a desk or shelf — a sculptural presence in a very small format.
Exposure & location
The Sansevieria Fernwood Punk is one of the most tolerant plants — it adapts to almost any light condition, from full sun to shade.
- Exposure: sun to partial shade — tolerates shade, but growth will be slower.
- Ideal: desk, shelf, bedroom, living room, or bright bathroom.
- Temperature: 15 to 30 °C — tolerates variations, avoid frost.
- Substrate: very draining — cactus and succulent soil with perlite.
The brighter the light, the faster the growth and the more intense the stripes — but it will survive without problem in a low-light room.
Watering & care
Sansevieria prefers to be forgotten — better to underwater than overwater. Excess water is the only real way to kill it. Always wait until the substrate is completely dry before watering again.
- Watering: low — let the substrate dry completely between waterings.
- Frequency: about once every 2 to 3 weeks in spring-summer, once a month in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and very draining substrate.
- Humidity: tolerates dry air — no misting needed.
- Fertilizer: every 4 to 6 weeks in spring-summer with diluted liquid cactus fertilizer.
In winter, watering once a month is enough — or even less if the plant is in a cool spot. Roots rot much faster in winter than in summer.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its cylindrical leaves create a minimalist sculptural effect that flat leaves cannot reproduce — an accent plant that structures a space without cluttering it.
- In combination: pair it with an Aloe vera or a graphic succulent for a contemporary arid composition — same aesthetic, same needs, simplified grouped care.
- Ideal pot: matte ceramic decorative pot (white, gray, black) or concrete — a matte pink Groovy pot Ø13 cm creates an unexpected and elegant contrast with the dark green leaves.
- Ambiance: perfect on a shelf or minimalist desk, in a bedroom or modern living room — its compact silhouette fits anywhere without ever cluttering the space.
The cylindrical leaves create a spectacular play of shadows and light — especially visible with side lighting in the evening.
Verdeia tips
- Overwatering is the only real danger — always wait until the substrate is completely dry before watering. When in doubt, wait another week. A Sansevieria that doesn’t get water for a month will survive without problem — a Sansevieria with rotting roots will not. Check our watering guide to master this habit.
- Ideal for bedrooms — like all Sansevieria, Fernwood Punk produces oxygen at night by continuing photosynthesis through the crassulacean pathway. A rare quality that makes it one of the best plants to improve air quality in a bedroom. Find our complete analysis on plants and air quality.
- Easily propagate by division — when repotting, gently separate the clumps into several plants. Each division will root easily in a new pot with draining substrate.
- The leaves curve slightly — this is natural and part of the graphic charm of the Fernwood Punk. It is not a sign of stress, unlike flat-leaf Sansevieria which indicates water deficiency by drooping.
