The Pteris cretica 'Albolineata', known as the ribbon fern, bears fronds divided into narrow leaflets crossed by a broad creamy-white stripe that follows the central vein exactly. Native to the moist understories of southern Europe, Africa and Asia, it joins the small indoor plants in the catalogue.
Its distinctive feature compared with other ferns is this regular variegation: where Asplenium and Nephrolepis play with solid green and leaf-blade divisions, Albolineata brings a clear two-tone contrast that few ferns possess. It remains upright and compact, without trailing.
Which indoor fern should you choose?
The catalogue brings together several fern genera with very different fronds:
- Pteris cretica 'Albolineata' (this plant) — narrow leaflets with a central creamy-white stripe, upright growth. The only variegated fern in the catalogue.
- Nephrolepis 'Green Lady' — trailing, light-green feathery fronds (4 sizes). The most ethereal version.
- Asplenium antiquum — broad, entire fronds in a bird's-nest rosette (3 sizes). The most architectural version.
- Phlebodium 'Blue Star' — blue-green divided fronds (4 sizes). The most colourful version.

Exposure & location
An understory fern, Albolineata grows in the shade of trees in its natural habitat. Direct sun burns the leaflets within a few hours, starting with the white areas that lack chlorophyll.
- Exposure: indirect light to partial shade — north-facing window, or east- and west-facing windows with a sheer curtain.
- Location: bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, home office away from windows — far from radiators.
- Temperature: 15 to 24 °C — minimum 10 °C; it tolerates cool conditions better than most tropical ferns.
- Soil type: light and rich in organic matter — potting soil for green plants amended with coco coir.
The bathroom is particularly suitable: shower steam naturally maintains the humidity it needs, without daily misting.
Watering & care
Like all ferns, Albolineata does not tolerate drying out: a dried frond will never turn green again. A moisture-retentive substrate is preferable here to a very free-draining mix, and any prolonged absence requires preparation.
- Watering: regular — the substrate should remain slightly moist at all times: twice a week in spring and summer, and once a week in winter.
- Water: preferably low in limescale — filtered or left to stand for 24 hours.
- Humidity: at least 60% — mist daily, or place the pot on a bed of damp clay pebbles.
- Drainage: use a pot with drainage holes and empty the saucer after each watering.
- Pruning: cut dry fronds flush with the substrate to open up the clump and stimulate new growth.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants, diluted to one-quarter strength, once a month from April to September only.
Aligned brown dots beneath the leaflets are not pests but sori, normal reproductive structures found on all ferns.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its two-tone foliage brightens a dark corner where green ferns create a uniform mass. It stands out even better against a neutral background or surrounded by vivid greens.
- For a shared humid corner, pair it with an Asplenium antiquum with broad, entire fronds — the same humidity requirements, but two contrasting blade shapes.
- For a color contrast, place a Phlebodium 'Blue Star' with blue-green foliage beside it — cream white and blue-gray create an unusual cool palette.
- To extend the variegation, add a cream-edged Chlorophytum 'Bonnie' — two light-colored types of foliage, one strap-like and the other curly.
- To make the white stand out, place the pot in an anthracite Ø20 cm Mayk Lead decorative pot with a brushed metal finish — the dark gray provides the highest contrast against variegated foliage.
- For a softer look, the matte white Ø14 cm Gabriel decorative pot with a honeycomb texture accommodates the Ø12 cm nursery pot and extends the cream stripe.
This size sits well on a low piece of furniture, a console table, or a bathtub ledge; at eye level, the regularity of the white stripe on each leaflet is much more noticeable.
Verdeia tips
- Never let the root ball dry out: a fern cannot regenerate a dried-out frond. A single lapse in watering leaves permanent brown fronds that must be cut off, which causes the clump to remain sparse for a long time.
- Group it with other tropical plants: several plants gathered together create a humid microclimate through evapotranspiration. This is the most effective way to maintain the 60% humidity it needs.
- Divide the clump when repotting: the rootstock can easily be separated into two or three sections in spring, each bearing several fronds and growing independently.
