Chlorophytum comosum 'Bonnie' stands out with leaves that curl into loops and spirals instead of trailing straight down, each edged with a fine cream border. A species native to the wooded areas of South Africa, it joins the easiest small indoor plants in the catalogue.
Its difference from the classic Chlorophytum lies entirely in its curly growth: the clump remains compact and tousled, whereas Variegatum produces long, straight, trailing leaves. The runners bearing young plantlets arch in the same way, giving the entire plant an airy appearance.
Which Chlorophytum should you choose?
The genus comes in two very different growth forms, detailed in our complete Chlorophytum guide:
- Chlorophytum comosum 'Bonnie' (this plant) — leaves curled into spirals, with a compact, tousled clump. The most original version.
- Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum' — long, straight, trailing leaves with cream stripes (3 sizes). The classic version, ideal for hanging.
Light exposure & location
Chlorophytum tolerates a wide range of light conditions, which explains its reputation as an almost indestructible plant. However, the cream variegation fades in shade, while direct sun burns the tips of the curled leaves.
- Light exposure: bright indirect light to partial shade — east- or west-facing window, or south-facing glass door with a sheer curtain.
- Location: shelf, desk, kitchen, bathroom, child’s bedroom — the plant adapts anywhere.
- Temperature: 15 to 26 °C — minimum 10 °C; tolerates cool rooms.
- Soil type: universal potting soil for green plants, with good drainage.
The leaves only curl properly in sufficient light: a plant placed in too much shade produces noticeably straighter leaves, which lose the cultivar’s character.
Watering & care
The fleshy roots of Chlorophytum store water, allowing it to withstand a missed watering without harm and be left alone while you are away. A slightly free-draining substrate, however, prevents these same roots from rotting.
- Watering: moderate — let the surface of the substrate dry to a depth of 2 cm, approximately once a week in spring and summer, and every two weeks in winter.
- Water: preferably limescale-free — tap water fluoride causes brown tips on the leaves.
- Drainage: use a pot with drainage holes and empty the saucer after each watering.
- Humidity: no special requirements; it is comfortable in ambient air.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants, diluted by half, once a month from April to September only.
- Repotting: every spring during the first two years — the roots quickly fill a pot of this diameter.
Roots that lift the root ball and deform the pot are normal for this species: it simply signals that it is time to repot.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its curly clump takes up little space but creates volume, making it ideal for shelves and windowsills where the curls stand out against the background. Its relaxed look pairs particularly well with bohemian-style interiors.
- For a duo of textures, pair it with a Chlorophytum 'Variegatum' with long, straight leaves — the same species, with two contrasting forms side by side.
- For a non-toxic shelf, place a Callisia repens with small, round, trailing leaves beside it — two pet-safe plants, one tousled and the other trailing.
- To extend the delicate look, add a Pogonatherum 'Monica' with upright stems — the grass's vertical form gives structure to the trio.

Placed up high, the plant lets its runners laden with young plantlets trail down: this is when its curly form is most visible.

- Propagate it with its plantlets: the offshoots that appear at the ends of the runners take root in one to two weeks, simply placed in a glass of water or pinned into a nearby pot. This is the fastest way to obtain new plants.
- Switch to limescale-free water: fluoride and chlorine in tap water build up at the tips of the leaves and cause clearly visible brown tips on curly foliage. Water left to stand for 24 hours is enough to prevent this.
- Cut brown tips at an angle: rather than removing the entire leaf, an angled cut that follows the natural shape of the blade goes unnoticed and preserves the clump's density.
