Crocodile Fern — Microsorum Crocodyllus — Ø12 cm — H30 cm
🌿 Unique textured foliage • 🐊 "Crocodile skin" texture • 💨 Air purifying • 🌤️ Partial shade • 💧 Likes humidity • 🌟 Easy care • 🐾 Non-toxic to pets
The Microsorum Crocodyllus, also called Crocodile Fern, captivates with its uniquely textured foliage reminiscent of reptile skin. Its long, veined leaves, deep glossy green, create an exotic yet refined look. Its soft, slightly drooping habit adds a gentle tropical touch to your interior.
Native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia, this tropical fern from the Polypodiaceae family naturally thrives in shaded, moist areas. The 'Crocodyllus' variety stands out with its embossed, veined fronds that create a spectacular, almost sculptural relief. A calming plant par excellence, it brings natural freshness and serenity. Ideal for bright bathrooms, temperate offices, or green living rooms where it creates a spa-like, tropical atmosphere.
Which Microsorum variety to choose?
Unsure which Microsorum variety to choose? Here’s a comparison to help you:
- Microsorum Crocodyllus (Crocodile Fern): Textured veined fronds, "crocodile skin" texture, small size 30 cm, soft drooping habit, easy care
- Microsorum Diversifolium (Kangaroo Fern): Lobed cut fronds, varied graphic shapes, medium size 45 cm, elegant sculptural form, easy care
💡 Verdeia tip: The Microsorum Crocodyllus is perfect if you’re looking for a unique and spectacular texture with a compact size, ideal for small spaces or plant arrangements.
Exposure and location
The Microsorum Crocodyllus thrives in bright environments without direct sunlight:
- Light: Indirect light to partial shade; avoid direct sun that burns its delicate foliage
- Bright bathroom: Ideal location thanks to natural humidity
- Temperate living room: Near a window with soft, diffuse light
- Office: Brings freshness and serenity to a workspace
- Kitchen: Benefits from ambient humidity and indirect light
- Avoid: Direct sunlight, dry air, and cold drafts
💡 Verdeia Tip: Place your Crocodile Fern on a tray filled with moist clay pebbles to maintain optimal humidity without soaking the roots.
Watering and care
- Watering: Keep the substrate slightly moist; water when the soil surface starts to dry
- Frequency: About once a week; adjust according to temperature and ambient humidity
- Water quality: Use non-calcareous water at room temperature; rainwater is ideal
- Humidity: Mist the foliage regularly to maintain tropical humidity; increase frequency in winter or near heating
- Fertilizer: Apply a little liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted by half in spring and summer; stop in autumn-winter
- Cleaning: Gently wipe leaves with a damp cloth to prevent dust and promote photosynthesis
- Pruning: Remove damaged or yellowing fronds at the base to encourage growth
💡 Verdeia Tip: The drier the air, the more important misting becomes. Your Crocodile Fern will thank you with even shinier, more textured leaves.
Decor ideas and plant pairings
With its textured, trailing foliage, the Crocodile Fern enhances both modern decor and soft tropical vibes:
- With other ferns: Pair with Nephrolepis, Asplenium, or Microsorum Diversifolium for a varied fern arrangement
- With tropical plants: Combine with Calathea, Syngonium, or Philodendron for a soothing urban jungle
- Tropical spa style: Create a zen atmosphere with natural ceramic decorative pots or woven baskets
- Hanging: Place it in a hanging basket to highlight its trailing habit
- In arrangements: Perfect for open terrariums or moist plant compositions
💡 Verdeia Tip: The Crocodile Fern becomes a living, textured piece in a natural ceramic decorative pot or hanging in a woven basket.
Verdeia tips
- Fronds browning: Air too dry or water too hard; increase ambient humidity and use filtered or rainwater
- Slow growth: Lack of light or fertilizer; move to a brighter spot and fertilize in spring
- Leaves fading: Too much direct light; move to a spot with soft, diffuse light
- Repotting: Repot every 2 years in spring with a light, well-draining mix (potting soil for green plants + perlite)
- Temperature: Keep between 18 and 26 °C; avoid overly dry conditions or cold drafts
- Stability: Place it in a calm environment with soft, diffuse light, and avoid frequent moves
💡 Verdeia tip: The Microsorum Crocodyllus easily fits into an urban interior and likes stability. Its unique texture makes it a standout plant.
