A terrarium is a miniature garden under glass: a self-sustaining micro-ecosystem that requires little or no maintenance. Whether open or closed, in a jar, cylinder, or tube, it transforms a simple plant into a living design object. Our glass plants are ready to display—no soil or assembly needed.
Closed Terrariums: The Self-Sustaining Ecosystem
A closed terrarium works in a nearly sealed loop: water evaporates, condenses on the walls, and falls back onto the substrate. The result: it practically waters itself. Our Clusia in jar with stopper and Monstera Adansonii in jar with stopper are ready-to-use closed terrariums. Place them in indirect light and forget about them—water only needs to be added every few weeks if the condensation disappears. Also check out our plants in jars and vases collection.
Open Terrariums and Glass Plants
Open terrariums (cylinder, tube, jar without stopper) allow air circulation and suit plants that prefer less humidity. Our Clusia in cylinder, Sansevieria in glass cylinder, and Monstera in cylinder vase are elegant and easy open arrangements. Versions with built-in LED add soft lighting that highlights the plant, even in a dark room—a true decorative piece.
Tillandsia: The Soil-Free Terrarium
Tillandsia (air plants) are the queens of minimalist terrariums. Without functional roots, they live perched on a decorative base—stone, driftwood, shell—inside a globe or glass container. The Tillandsia LED set and the Tillandsia Cube Mix are ready-to-display compositions with striking graphic appeal. A simple soak in water once a week is enough for care. Explore our air plants and decorative bases collection.
Mini Terrariums: Original Gift Ideas
Small formats—Clusia Samoa, Clusia Victoria, glass tubes—make perfect gifts: compact, original, and almost maintenance-free. The Berlin jar plant mix (set of 3 mini jars) is a gift box that always makes an impression. Discover our ready-to-gift plants collection and our guide plants to give: symbolism and meaning.
Where to Place a Terrarium?
Indirect light is ideal for most terrariums. Avoid direct sunlight, which turns the jar into a greenhouse and cooks the plants inside. A north- or east-facing windowsill, a living room shelf, a coffee table, or a desk are perfect spots. Versions with built-in LED work even in rooms without natural light—bathroom, hallway, bedroom. See our article light and humidity: finding the right balance.
Create Your Own Terrarium
Want to create your own arrangement? Compact plants that tolerate humidity are the best candidates: small ferns (Asplenium Crispy Wave), Peperomia, mini Syngonium, Clusia, and mosses. Add a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom for drainage, soil, and some decorative elements (stones, moss, wood).
