The Strelitzia, or bird of paradise, is the indoor plant that makes the biggest impact with the least effort. Its large, upright leaves, resembling paddles, give it an immediately recognizable exotic silhouette. Robust, fast-growing, and spectacular from day one — it’s the ultimate statement plant.

Our Strelitzia Varieties

The Strelitzia Nicolai (white bird of paradise, giant bird of paradise) is the most imposing variety. Its broad, leathery leaves, held on long petioles, can reach over 2 meters indoors. It’s the plant that can transform a living room into a tropical jungle all by itself. Its slender form takes up little floor space for maximum visual impact. The Strelitzia Reginae is more compact and slower growing: its narrower, stiffer leaves form a dense, graphic clump. It’s also the only species that can flower indoors — the famous orange and blue bird-shaped flower — although this requires a lot of light and patience.

The #1 Urban Jungle Plant

The Strelitzia Nicolai has become the icon of tropical interior decoration. Its XXL foliage instantly creates volume and a powerful plant atmosphere. Pair it with a Monstera for cut leaves, an Alocasia for graphic shapes, and hanging plants to complete the arrangement. Exposure: Light, Light, Light

The Strelitzia is a full sun South African plant. Indoors, give it the brightest spot possible: directly in front of a large south- or southwest-facing window, with direct sunlight if possible. The Nicolai tolerates partial shade but its growth slows and its leaves spread out. The Reginae needs even more light to have a chance to flower. Check out our article light and humidity: finding the right balance and our full sun plants collection.

Strelitzia Care

The Strelitzia is surprisingly easy to care for considering how spectacular it is. Water when the top 3-4 centimeters of soil dry out — it prefers slight drying over excess water. In summer, weekly watering is usually enough; in winter, water less often. A well-draining universal potting mix works perfectly. Fertilizing every two weeks in spring and summer supports rapid growth. See our complete watering guide.

Leaves Tearing: Normal?

Yes, it’s completely normal. In nature, Strelitzia leaves split along the veins due to wind — it’s a survival mechanism that reduces wind resistance. Indoors, drafts, passing by, or simple contact with a wall is enough. These tears don’t affect the plant’s health and are part of its tropical charm. If you prefer intact leaves, place the Strelitzia in a sheltered spot. For other symptoms, see our article diagnosing common problems.

Repotting a Strelitzia

The Strelitzia Nicolai grows fast and needs repotting every 1 to 2 years into a slightly larger pot. Choose a heavy, stable pot (ceramic, terracotta): the plant becomes large and can tip over in a pot that’s too light. The slower-growing Reginae only needs repotting every 2 to 3 years. Paradoxically, the Reginae flowers better when slightly root-bound. Our article when and how to repot and our guide choosing the right pot will help you.
