Frequently Asked Questions
Can Sarracenia × Catesbaei stay outside in winter? It tolerates temperatures down to -5 °C and needs a cool winter rest between 5 and 10 °C — leave it outside protected from frost or place it in a cool, bright space from November to February.
Why are the pitchers of my Sarracenia × Catesbaei losing their colors? A lack of direct light is the main cause — move it closer to a source of direct sunlight and its new pitchers will regain intense red and green shades.

🐾 Non-toxic • 🪴 Sculptural red and green pitchers • 🌞 Direct sun / Bright Partial shade • 💧 Always-moist substrate • 📏 H23 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
The Sarracenia × Catesbaei, also known as hybrid pitcher plant, is a spectacular natural cross between Sarracenia flava and Sarracenia purpurea - its pitchers combine the slender height of flava with the deep red hues of purpurea, creating a sculptural form and particularly intense colors. Native to North America, it is ideal for a sunny balcony or a full-sun window. Combine it with other carnivorous plants to create a complete carnivorous garden.
What sets it apart from other Sarracenias: its pitchers can reach 40 cm at maturity - much more imposing than psittacina or venosa. Each species of carnivorous plants has its own care requirements.
Light & placement
Sarracenia × Catesbaei thrives in abundant light - the more direct sun it receives, the more intensely its pitchers develop their colors. It grows very well outdoors from April to October.
- Light: direct sun or very bright partial shade - aim for 4 to 6 hours of direct sun per day.
- Ideal for: a sunny balcony or terrace, a full-sun windowsill, or a bright greenhouse.
- Temperature: 5 to 28 °C - tolerates cool conditions during winter dormancy.
- Substrate: poor, acidic mix - sphagnum peat and perlite, without fertilizer.
Watering & care
- Water required: exclusively rainwater or demineralized water - limescale is fatal to carnivorous plants. Maintain 1 to 2 cm of non-calcareous water in the saucer during the growing season; the substrate must never dry out. Sarracenia venosa follows the same care requirements.
- Winter (dormancy): reduce the water level and keep the substrate just moist in a cool location (5 to 10 °C).
- Fertilizer: none - unnecessary and harmful to the roots.
- Pruning: remove brown or dried pitchers to encourage new growth.
- Repotting: every 1 to 2 years in spring, using a fresh peat/perlite mix.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its slender red and green pitchers create a sculptural silhouette that immediately draws the eye on a balcony or on a console near a sunny window. A reliable choice for a plant-filled corner.
- In a carnivorous display: pair it with a Dionaea muscipula with toothed traps and a Drosera aliciae with glistening droplets - three different mechanisms (pitchers / jaws / droplets), the same watering requirements, and a spectacular carnivorous display.
- In a Sarracenia collection: pair it with Sarracenia psittacina and its reclining parrot-like pitchers - two Sarracenias with two radically different pitcher shapes (upright vs reclining), a fascinating duo within the same genus.
- Decorative pot: matte ceramic or beige/gray stoneware creates an effective contrast with the red and green hues of the pitchers - use a decorative pot without a closed bottom to keep the saucer accessible.
Verdeia tips
- Non-calcareous water is absolutely essential: even a single watering with tap water may be enough to weaken the plant - use only rainwater or demineralized water and always maintain 1 to 2 cm of water in the saucer.
- More sun = more intense colors: Sarracenia × Catesbaei develops its deepest red and green hues under maximum direct light - a south-facing balcony in summer is its ideal location.
- Respect its winter dormancy: place it in a cool (5 to 10 °C), bright location between November and February - this dormancy is essential for vigorous spring growth with new, colorful pitchers.
