Frequently Asked Questions
Can Sarracenia × Catesbaei stay outside in winter? It tolerates temperatures down to -5 °C and needs a cool winter rest between 5 and 10 °C — leave it outside protected from frost or place it in a cool, bright space from November to February.
Why are the pitchers of my Sarracenia × Catesbaei losing their colors? A lack of direct light is the main cause — move it closer to a source of direct sunlight and its new pitchers will regain intense red and green shades.

🐾 Non-toxic • 🪴 Sculptural red and green decorative pots • 🌞 Direct sun / Partial shade bright • 💧 Substrate always moist • 📏 H23 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
Sarracenia × Catesbaei, also called Hybrid Sarracenia, is a spectacular natural cross between Sarracenia flava and Sarracenia purpurea — its pitchers combine the slender height of flava and the deep red hues of purpurea, for a sculptural shape and particularly intense colors. Native to North America, it is ideal for a sunny balcony or a window with full sun. Discover our other carnivorous plants to create a complete carnivorous garden.
Its uniqueness compared to other Sarracenias: its pitchers can reach 40 cm at maturity — much larger than psittacina or venosa. Our complete carnivorous plants guide explains the specific care requirements for each species.
Exposure & Location
Sarracenia × Catesbaei loves abundant light — the more direct sun it receives, the more intensely its pitchers color. It grows very well outdoors from April to October.
- Exposure: direct sun or very bright partial shade — aim for 4 to 6 hours of direct sun per day.
- Ideal for: sunny balcony or terrace, full sun windowsill, bright greenhouse.
- Temperature: 5 to 28 °C — tolerates cool temperatures during winter dormancy.
- Substrate: poor and acidic mix — blond peat and perlite, no fertilizer.
Watering & Care
- Water required: exclusively rainwater or demineralized water — lime is fatal to carnivorous plants. Keep 1 to 2 cm of non-lime water in the saucer during the growing season; the substrate must never dry out. Also check out the Sarracenia venosa which shares the same care logic.
- Winter (dormancy): reduce water level, keep substrate just moist in a cool place (5 to 10 °C).
- Fertilizer: none — unnecessary and harmful to roots.
- Pruning: remove brown or dried pitchers to encourage new growth.
- Repotting: every 1 to 2 years in spring with fresh peat/perlite mix.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
Its slender red and green pitchers create a sculptural silhouette that immediately draws the eye on a balcony or a console near a sunny window. Our guide to creating a plant corner will give you ideas to integrate it into your decor.
- On a carnivorous tray: pair it with a Dionaea muscipula with toothed traps and a Drosera aliciae with shiny droplets — three different mechanisms (pitchers / jaws / droplets), same watering logic, spectacular carnivorous tray.
- In a Sarracenia collection: pair it with Sarracenia psittacina with its parrot-shaped, horizontal pitchers — two Sarracenias, two radically different pitcher shapes (upright vs. horizontal), a fascinating duo in the same genus.
- Decorative pot: a matte ceramic or beige/gray stoneware contrasts effectively with the red and green hues of the pitchers — use a decorative pot without a closed bottom to keep the saucer accessible.
Verdeia Tips
- Absolutely mandatory non-lime water: even a single watering with tap water can weaken the plant — use exclusively rainwater or demineralized water and always keep 1 to 2 cm of water in the saucer.
- More sun = more intense colors: Sarracenia × Catesbaei develops its deepest red and green hues under maximum direct light — a south-facing balcony in summer is its ideal location.
- Respect winter dormancy: place it in a cool (5 to 10 °C) and bright spot from November to February — this dormancy is essential for vigorous new growth in spring with colorful new pitchers.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
