Frequently Asked Questions
How do you care for an Alocasia Red Secret? Bright indirect light is essential, moderate watering with the top few centimeters drying out between waterings, high humidity 60-80% — mist 2 to 3 times a week. Use filtered water to avoid lime deposits that dull the shiny foliage. Fertilize once a month in spring and summer.
Is the Alocasia Red Secret toxic to pets? Yes, like all Alocasias, it contains irritating calcium oxalates and is toxic if ingested by dogs and cats. Keep it out of reach of your pets and young children.

🌿 Glossy dark green upper surface • 🔴 Intense purple-red underside • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H35 cm | Pot Ø14 cm • ⚠️ Toxic to animals
The Alocasia Red Secret is a compact tropical plant native to the forests of Southeast Asia. Its foliage plays on two contrasting tones — glossy dark green upper surface and an intense purple-red underside revealed with the slightest leaf movement. A rare and elegant two-tone effect in a compact H35 cm | Pot Ø14 cm size.
Demanding in terms of humidity, but immediately sophisticated in appearance. Please note: toxic if ingested by animals.
Which Alocasia variety should you choose?
The Alocasia genus includes compact varieties and large architectural plants with highly distinctive foliage. Here are the most differentiated profiles:
- Alocasia Red Secret (this plant) — dark green upper surface, intense purple-red underside, H35 cm | Pot Ø14 cm. The only one with such a pronounced two-tone effect.
- Alocasia Bambino Arrow — glossy dark green arrow-shaped leaves with prominent veins, H40 cm | Pot Ø14 cm. The most graphic and dynamic.
- Alocasia Nebula Silver Compacta — metallic silver foliage with nebulous patterns, H30 cm | Pot Ø14 cm. The most sophisticated.
- Alocasia Dragon Scale — textured leaves with silver and green dragon-scale patterns. The most textured and rarest.
- Alocasia Macrorrhiza — very large heart-shaped leaves, imposing H70 cm size | Pot Ø19 cm. The largest.
Other varieties of Alocasia are available — Cucullata, Wentii, Zebrina, Regal Shield and more.
Light & placement
The Alocasia Red Secret needs bright indirect light — this is also essential for its deep purple-red underside to remain intense and high-contrast.
- Ideal light: bright indirect light — near an east- or west-facing window.
- To avoid: direct sun that burns the leaves, excessive shade that diminishes the red underside.
- Temperature: 18–27 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Humidity: ideal ambient humidity of 60–80% — mist regularly or use a humidifier.
- Substrate: light, airy, and well-drained — universal potting soil with perlite.
Place it high on a shelf — viewed from below, the purplish red underside is even more visible and the two-tone effect is fully revealed.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — let the top 2–3 cm of substrate dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: approximately once a week in spring and summer, less often in winter.
- Water: filtered water or water left to stand for 24 hours — limescale dulls the foliage.
- Humidity: mist the foliage regularly in dry conditions.
- Drainage: a Pot with drainage holes is essential — the roots quickly rot in waterlogged substrate.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, once a month in spring and summer.
In winter, the Alocasia may lose one or more leaves and enter dormancy — reduce watering and wait until spring. The first few days matter: a few simple steps help you welcome a new plant.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The two-tone effect of Alocasia Red Secret is more visible depending on the viewing angle — a plant that reveals itself differently depending on where you stand.
- On a high shelf: viewed from below, the purplish red underside is immediately visible — place it up high to maximize the two-tone effect.
- In an arrangement: pair it with a Calathea with rounded leaves or a trailing Pothos for an effective contrast of shapes and colors.
- Ideal Pot: matte black or anthracite ceramic — the contrast with the dark green and purplish red is striking.
Near a light source shining through the leaves, the red underside shows through slightly on the green leaf blade — a highly decorative translucent effect.
Verdeia Tips
- Humidity is essential — native to humid tropical understories, it quickly suffers from dry air. Mist it 2 to 3 times a week or place a humidifier nearby in winter.
- Winter dormancy is normal — one or more leaves may fall in winter. Reduce watering, maintain light levels, and wait for spring.
- Avoid hard water — it can cause white spots and dull the glossy foliage. Use filtered water or water that has been left to stand for 24 hours instead.
- Repot every year in spring — annual repotting in a slightly larger pot helps maintain active growth and beautifully sized leaves.
- ⚠️ Toxic to animals and humans — contains irritating calcium oxalates. Keep it out of reach of cats, dogs, and young children. In a home with pets, it is best to choose from these pet- and animal-friendly plants.
