Frequently Asked Questions
How to maintain the silvery shine of the Alocasia Nebula foliage? Two factors are crucial: light and leaf cleanliness. Place the plant in bright indirect light — without enough light, the metallic reflections fade. Gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth every 2 weeks to remove dust that dulls the silvery shine.
Is the Alocasia Nebula Silver Compacta toxic to pets? Yes, like all Alocasias, it contains irritating calcium oxalates and is toxic if ingested by dogs and cats. Keep it out of reach of your pets and young children.

🌿 Metallic silver foliage • 🎨 Unique nebula patterns • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Regular watering • 📏 H30 cm | Pot Ø14 cm • ⚠️ Toxic to pets
The Alocasia Nebula Silver Compacta is a tropical plant native to the forests of Southeast Asia. Its heart-shaped leaves with metallic silver tones and contrasting dark veins give it an almost mineral look — each leaf is unique in its patterns. Compact size H30 cm | Pot Ø14 cm, ideal for a shelf or desk.
Demanding in light and humidity, but immediately offers a sophisticated decorative effect. Note: toxic if ingested by pets. Discover it in our Alocasia collection.
Which Alocasia variety to choose?
The Alocasia genus is divided between large architectural varieties and small compact varieties with highly detailed foliage. Here are the most distinctive compact profiles:
- Alocasia Nebula Silver Compacta (this plant) — metallic silver foliage with nebula-like patterns, H30 cm | Pot Ø14 cm. The most sophisticated and metallic.
- Alocasia Silver Dragon — silvery scaly-textured foliage, H25 cm | Pot Ø12 cm. The most textured.
- Alocasia Bambino Arrow — dark green arrow-shaped leaves, H40 cm | Pot Ø14 cm. The most graphic.
- Alocasia Red Secret — green foliage with coppery red underside, H35 cm | Pot Ø14 cm. The most colorful.
- Alocasia Lukiwan — very compact dark green foliage, H20 cm | Pot Ø12 cm. The smallest.
Other XXL varieties are available in our full collection — Regal Shield, Gageana California, and more.
Exposure & location
The Alocasia Nebula Silver Compacta needs bright indirect light to maintain the metallic shine of its foliage — this is its main requirement.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light — near an east- or west-facing window.
- Avoid: direct sunlight that burns delicate leaves, and too much shade that makes the silvery reflections disappear.
- Temperature: 18–27 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Humidity: ideal ambient humidity is 60–80% — mist regularly or place on a bed of moist clay pebbles.
- Substrate: light and well-drained — universal potting soil with perlite.
The silvery reflections are directly linked to light — the brighter and more indirect the light, the shinier and more contrasted the foliage will be.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular — keep the soil slightly moist without ever soaking it.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times a week in spring-summer, reduced in winter.
- Water: filtered or left to stand for 24 hours — hard water dulls the silvery leaves.
- Humidity: regularly mist the foliage in dry air.
- Drainage: pot with drainage holes required, empty the saucer after watering.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, every 2 to 4 weeks in spring and summer.
- Cleaning: gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their silvery shine.
In winter, the Alocasia may enter dormancy and lose one or more leaves — this is a normal reaction to reduced light and lower temperatures. Reduce watering and wait for warmer days. Check our new plant care guide to get off to a good start.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The metallic silver foliage of the Alocasia Nebula Silver Compacta creates an immediate contrast with green leaves — it doesn’t need to be surrounded to catch the eye.
- On a desk or shelf: in a black or anthracite ceramic pot, its silver foliage stands out with striking contrast.
- In arrangements: pair it with a Philodendron or a dark green Calathea to highlight its silver reflections by contrast.
- Ideal pot: matte black, anthracite, or dark gray ceramic — dark tones enhance the silver reflections without competing with them.
Its nebula-like patterns differ on each leaf — a plant that evolves and surprises with every new shoot.
Verdeia advice
- Light controls the silver shine — without enough bright indirect light, the metallic reflections fade and the foliage dulls. Place it near a bright window upon arrival and don’t move it without reason.
- Humidity is essential — native to humid tropical understories, it quickly suffers from dry air. Mist 2 to 3 times a week or use a humidifier nearby in winter.
- Winter dormancy is normal — one or more leaves may fall in winter. Reduce watering, maintain light, and wait for spring — the plant will naturally regrow.
- Repot every spring — compact Alocasias grow relatively fast. Annual repotting into a slightly larger pot keeps growth active and leaves a good size.
- ⚠️ Toxic to pets and humans — contains irritating calcium oxalates. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs, and young children. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
