Frequently Asked Questions
Why use an acidic substrate for a Japanese Maple? Acer palmatum naturally grows in slightly acidic forest soils. An acidic substrate enhances the intensity of leaf colors and prevents leaf yellowing caused by iron chlorosis — a common problem in alkaline soils. Use a special ericaceous potting mix or add sulfur to acidify the substrate.
Can the Japanese Maple stay outside in winter? Yes — and it’s actually essential. Acer palmatum is very hardy down to -20°C and needs a cold period for its winter dormancy. Bringing it indoors would disrupt its natural cycle and weaken the plant. Simply protect the pot from prolonged frost with a frost cloth if necessary.

🍁 Orange shoots in spring • 🌿 Tender green in summer • 🔴 Golden to fiery red in autumn • ☀️ Partial shade to gentle sun • ❄️ Hardy down to -20°C • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Acer palmatum 'Orange Dream', or Golden Japanese Maple, is a deciduous ornamental shrub native to Japan with spectacular and changing foliage — bright orange shoots in spring, tender green in summer, then golden to fiery red in autumn. Its compact and elegant habit makes it an ideal plant for terraces, balconies, and small urban spaces. Available in two sizes.
Very hardy down to -20°C, non-toxic to animals. Discover it in our selection of plants for balconies and terraces.
Which Japanese Maple variety to choose?
The Acer palmatum genus comes in several colors and distinct characters:
- Acer palmatum 'Orange Dream' (this plant) — orange shoots in spring, golden to red in autumn, compact habit. The brightest all season.
- Acer palmatum 'Going Green' — bright green foliage in spring, orange-red in autumn. The most classic and understated.
- Acer palmatum 'Garnet' — deep burgundy foliage lasting all season, with a weeping habit. The most dramatic.
The three varieties pair perfectly — green, orange, and red create a very colorful and changing composition throughout the seasons. Find them in our urban shrubs collection.
Exposure & location
- Ideal exposure: bright partial shade to gentle sun — morning light or light afternoon shade.
- To avoid: harsh afternoon sun that burns delicate leaves, strong winds.
- Soil: light, well-drained, rich in humus and slightly acidic.
- In a pot: balcony or terrace ideally facing east or northeast.
- Hardiness: Very hardy down to -20 °C — leave it outside in winter.
A gentle, bright exposure reveals the full richness of its golden and orange foliage — its warm tones are especially spectacular at sunrise. See our autumn plant inspiration guide to make the most of its seasonal display.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular — keep the soil moist without waterlogging.
- In a pot: monitor moisture more frequently in summer and windy weather.
- Water: avoid hard water — preferably filtered or rainwater.
- Mulching: recommended to preserve moisture and protect roots sensitive to heat.
- Fertilizer: balanced and mild in spring, then again in late summer.
- Pruning: light pruning at the end of winter — remove only dry or crossing branches.
In a pot, the substrate dries quickly in hot weather — check moisture every 2-3 days in summer. See our winter plant guide to prepare your maple well for the cold season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its changing foliage with warm tones makes it a spectacular plant from spring to autumn.
- Japanese ambiance: pair it with a Fargesia Moontears or a Fargesia Rufa for a zen and graphic composition — maple and bamboo, a classic and calming duo.
- Color contrast: pair it with a Camellia for a colorful, Japanese-inspired arrangement — the Camellia’s winter bloom takes over visually when the maple is dormant.
- Ideal pot: large stoneware or heather clay pot with slightly acidic, well-draining substrate — its golden tones stand out especially well in natural clay containers.
Its orange and golden tones pair perfectly with deep green or purplish red foliage — a Going Green + Orange Dream + Garnet trio is especially effective. Find more inspiration in our shade balcony plants collection.
Verdeia tips
- Slightly acidic substrate essential — special ericaceous or slightly acidic potting soil. This enhances colors and prevents yellowing caused by lime.
- Protect from strong winds — the delicate foliage dries out and burns quickly in windy exposure. A sheltered location is essential.
- Keep it outside in winter — cold is essential for its dormancy. Bringing it indoors would disrupt its natural cycle. Check our care calendar for the right actions by season.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — Acer palmatum is completely safe for dogs and cats.
