Frequently asked questions
Why are the edges of my Japanese maple’s leaves turning brown? Brown edges almost always indicate too much direct sunlight, lack of water, or drying wind. Move the plant to a shadier spot, water more regularly, and protect it from strong winds. Hard water can also cause this symptom — use filtered or rainwater instead.
Does the Japanese maple lose its leaves in winter? Yes — Acer palmatum is a deciduous shrub. It loses its leaves after the autumn display and grows back vigorously in spring. This is a natural and normal process. Do not bring it indoors in winter — it needs the cold for dormancy.

🍁 Bright green foliage in spring • 🔴 Flamboyant orange-red in autumn • ☀️ Partial shade to gentle sun • 💧 Regular watering • ❄️ Hardy down to -20°C • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Acer palmatum 'Going Green', or green Japanese maple, is a deciduous ornamental shrub native to Japan, with a compact and elegant habit. Its bright green foliage, with finely divided palmate leaves, turns a flamboyant orange-red in autumn — a remarkable seasonal display. Available in two sizes to suit every space, from balcony to garden.
Very hardy down to -20°C, non-toxic to animals. A reliable choice among plants for balconies and terraces.
Which Japanese maple variety should you choose?
The Acer palmatum species comes in several distinct colors and forms:
- Acer palmatum 'Going Green' (this plant) — bright green foliage, orange-red in autumn, with a compact habit. The brightest in spring.
- Acer palmatum 'Orange Dream' — golden orange foliage in spring, highly colorful all season. The brightest.
- Acer palmatum 'Garnet' — burgundy-red foliage that lasts all season, with a cascading habit. The most dramatic.
The three varieties pair perfectly together — green, orange, and red create a highly colorful maple composition that changes with the seasons. They are among our urban shrubs.
Exposure & placement
- Ideal exposure: partial shade to gentle sun — morning light or light afternoon shade.
- To avoid: scorching afternoon sun, which burns and dries out the delicate foliage, and strong winds.
- Soil: rich, moist, and well-drained — preferably slightly acidic.
- In a pot: balcony or terrace, ideally facing east or northeast.
- Hardiness: very hardy down to -20 °C — leave it outside in winter; the cold stimulates dormancy.
Its delicate foliage is particularly striking in partially shaded areas with soft light — an east-facing corner suits it perfectly. Its autumn foliage is one of the finest autumn botanical inspirations.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular — keep the growing medium moist without excess standing water.
- In a pot: monitor moisture more frequently in summer — pots dry out quickly in high heat.
- Water: avoid hard water, which dulls the foliage — filtered or rainwater is preferable.
- Fertilizer: balanced fertilizer in spring, then every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season.
- Pruning: light pruning at the end of winter to maintain a harmonious shape — remove only dry or crossing branches.
- Mulching: mulch around the base in summer to retain soil moisture and protect roots sensitive to heat.
In a pot, the growing medium dries out much faster than in the ground — check the moisture every 2-3 days in summer. A few simple steps are enough to prepare the maple for the cold season, just like all plants in winter.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its changing foliage makes it a plant for every season — a true botanical spectacle from spring to autumn.
- Zen atmosphere: pair it with a Fargesia Moontears or a Fargesia Rufa for a Japanese-inspired arrangement — maple and bamboo, a classic and soothing duo.
- Graphic contrast: pair it with a Carex Irish Green for a contrast of textures — dissected leaves against linear leaves.
- Ideal pot: stoneware, terracotta, or anthracite gray pot — natural materials complement its Japanese-inspired character.
- Mineral elements: pair it with pebbles, gravel, or Japanese stepping stones to enhance its Zen appeal.
In a pot on a balcony, it becomes a true focal point — elegant, soothing, and ever-changing with the seasons. A reliable choice for an outdoor jungle.
Verdeia tips
- Protect it from strong winds — the delicate foliage dries out quickly in windy conditions. A sheltered spot on a balcony or terrace is ideal.
- Use a slightly acidic substrate — ericaceous or slightly acidic potting soil. This enhances autumn colors and prevents the foliage from yellowing due to limescale.
- Leave it outside in winter — Acer palmatum is very hardy and needs a cold period for dormancy. Bringing it indoors would disrupt its natural cycle. The right care varies by season, following the care calendar.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — Acer palmatum is completely safe for dogs and cats.
