Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Campsis Gold Trumpet frost-resistant? Yes, it is hardy in a sheltered location. Protect it during the first two years with a winter cover or mulch at the base until it is well rooted.
How to train a Campsis to climb a facade? Campsis is self-clinging thanks to its adhesive rootlets. Guide the first stems to the support with soft ties at the start — once established, it climbs on its own. Without support, it grows as a compact shrub.

🌸 Abundant golden yellow flowering • ☀️ Full sun • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm • ❄️ Hardy and resilient • ⚠️ Slightly toxic if ingested
The Campsis Summer Jazz 'Gold Trumpet', or yellow-flowered Trumpet Creeper, is a spectacular climbing vine native to North America. Its large golden yellow trumpet-shaped flowers, borne in generous clusters at the end of summer, make it one of the most remarkable climbers to dress a facade, pergola, or sunny balcony.
Compact variety — max 3 meters versus 10 for wild species — it adapts well to both garden and container growing. Self-clinging thanks to its adhesive rootlets, it climbs alone along a facade or trellis. Without support, it naturally takes on a shrubby habit. Discover it in our collection of climbing plants.
Which Campsis variety to choose?
All Trumpet Creepers share the same hardiness and generous flowering — it is the color and habit that distinguish them. Here is how the Gold Trumpet fits into our collection:
- Campsis 'Gold Trumpet' (this plant) — golden yellow flowers, compact habit (max 3 m), prolonged late summer bloom. The brightest and most original.
- Campsis 'Fire Trumpet' — bright red flowers, compact habit, generous summer bloom. The most flamboyant.
- Campsis 'Indian Summer' — warm orange flowers, classic habit. The Mediterranean and sunny version.
- Campsis 'Pink Panther' — salmon pink flowers, soft and elegant tone. The most romantic.
The Gold Trumpet is the only yellow-flowered Trumpet Creeper in our catalog — a rare and distinctive choice for those who want to move away from classic orange shades.
Exposure & location
The Campsis Summer Jazz 'Gold Trumpet' is a sun-loving plant — this is its primary condition for abundant flowering and longevity. The sunnier the exposure, the denser and longer the bloom.
- Ideal exposure: full sun, minimum 6 hours per day — south or southwest facing.
- Location: sunny facade, pergola, trellis, well-exposed balcony or terrace.
- Hardy: frost resistant in a sheltered spot — protect it from cold winds during the first years.
- Substrate: any well-drained soil, even poor. Avoid soils that are constantly waterlogged.
- Support: self-clinging — but provide a trellis early in growth to guide it.
Without support, it takes on a compact shrub form — an interesting option to dress a large container on a terrace without a trellis.
Watering & maintenance
- Watering: moderate — water regularly the first year to encourage rooting, then gradually reduce.
- Established plant: very drought tolerant once well rooted, occasional watering during hot spells.
- In a pot: water more regularly than in the ground — check the substrate and water as soon as the top 3 centimeters are dry.
- Fertilizer: spring feeding with a flowering plant fertilizer promotes more abundant blooms.
- Pruning: prune short in late winter (February-March) to stimulate new flowering shoots and control volume.
- Repotting: every 2 years in spring if grown in a pot.
Campsis blooms on the current year's wood — severe pruning in late winter is no problem; on the contrary, it ensures a denser bloom the following summer.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
With its golden trumpet-shaped flowers and natural vigor, the Campsis 'Gold Trumpet' quickly transforms a bare surface into a spectacular green wall. It is equally comfortable on a 10 m² facade or in a pot on a large balcony.
- On a facade: pair it with a Parthenocissus for a dense green wall with contrasting colors — golden yellow in summer, fiery red in autumn.
- On a pergola: perfect for creating a flowering green ceiling in late summer, when most other climbers have finished blooming.
- In a pot on a balcony: in a large container with a trellis, it quickly covers a wall or railing. Discover our ideas for balconies and terraces.
- Alone on a terrace: without support, it forms a dense, flowering shrub in a large container — spectacular enough to stand on its own.
Its late summer flowering takes over when roses and clematis start to fade — keep this in mind to ensure continuous color in your garden.
Verdeia tips
- Sunlight is non-negotiable — without at least 6 hours of direct sun per day, Campsis grows but flowers little or not at all. This is its main requirement.
- Support it at planting — self-climbing does not mean independent from the start. Guide the first stems to the support with soft ties: once established, it no longer needs help.
- Prune without hesitation in late winter — Campsis blooms on new wood. A short prune in February-March stimulates new shoots and ensures dense flowering. Not pruning results in a tall but sparsely flowering plant.
- Protect it during the first two years — hardy once established, it can suffer from severe cold before rooting well. A winter cover or mulch at the base is enough for the first seasons.
- Monitor its vigor in the ground — the Gold Trumpet variety is compact, but Campsis remains a vigorous plant. Prune regularly to prevent it from spreading onto gutters or window frames.
- ⚠️ Slightly toxic and irritating — Campsis can cause skin irritation on contact with sap in sensitive individuals, and digestive issues if ingested. Wear gloves when handling and keep children away.
