Frequently Asked Questions
How to prune a Campsis for abundant flowering? Prune short at the end of winter (February-March) — shorten all stems to 2-3 pairs of buds. Campsis blooms on the wood of the current year: short pruning stimulates many new flowering stems. Without pruning, the plant becomes tangled and flowers less.
Can Campsis grow in a pot on a balcony? Yes, provided you use a large pot (at least 40-50 cm in diameter) and install a sturdy support. Water more frequently than in the ground — pots dry out quickly in summer. Regular flowering plant fertilizer is essential in pots.

🧡 Spectacular bright orange trumpet flowers • 🌿 Vigorous climber • 🐝 Honey plant — attracts butterflies and pollinators • ☀️ Full sun • 💧 Regular watering • ❄️ Hardy to -15°C • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Campsis radicans 'Indian Summer', or Orange Trumpet Vine, is a vigorous climbing plant native to North America. Its large bright orange trumpet flowers bloom abundantly from July to September — a late and generous flowering that extends the summer season when many other plants have already faded. Its fast growth covers walls, pergolas, and trellises within a few seasons. H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm at delivery.
Hardy, non-toxic. Discover it in our selection of climbing plants.
Which Campsis variety to choose?
The Campsis genus offers several flower colors:
- Campsis 'Indian Summer' (this plant) — bright vivid orange flowers, generous flowering July-September, very vigorous growth. The most spectacular.
- Campsis 'Pink Panther' — elegant and delicate pink trumpet flowers. The most romantic.
- Campsis 'Summer Jazz Fire Trumpet' — bright red flowers, more compact habit. The most intense in color.
- Campsis 'Summer Jazz Gold Trumpet' — bright golden yellow flowers. The brightest.
Exposure & location
- Ideal exposure: full sun — warm and sheltered spot for maximum flowering.
- Ideal locations: south-facing wall, pergola, fence, trellis on balcony or terrace.
- Support: trellis, wires, or espalier required — provide a sturdy support as the plant becomes heavy over time.
- Hardiness: down to -15 °C — can stay outdoors year-round.
- Soil: rich, light, and well-drained.
The warmer and sunnier the location, the more generous the flowering. A south or southwest-facing wall is ideal. Check our spring preparation guide for the right seasonal care.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular — keep the substrate slightly moist without waterlogging.
- Frequency: 2 to 3 times per week in spring-summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: pot must have drainage holes.
- Fertilizer: flowering plant fertilizer, every 2 weeks in spring-summer.
- Pruning: light pruning at the end of winter — Campsis flowers on new wood, short pruning encourages abundant flowering.
End-of-winter pruning is the most important step — shorten stems to 2-3 pairs of buds to stimulate generous flowering. See our care calendar for the right seasonal actions.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its large bright orange flowers instantly create a Mediterranean and exotic atmosphere — a plant that transforms an ordinary wall or pergola into a holiday setting.
- On pergola or trellis: let it climb freely — within a few seasons it fully covers a pergola and creates a spectacular flowered ceiling from July to September.
- In combination: pair it with Lavender Hidcote Blue at the base for a very honey-rich orange-purple Mediterranean duo.
- Contrast: its bright orange flowers stand out beautifully against a white, cream, or light plaster wall.
Its late flowering (July-September) is valuable — it takes over when many summer plants start to fade.
Verdeia tips
- Provide a sturdy support — Campsis can reach 3 to 4 meters and become very heavy. Install a robust trellis or wires before planting.
- Prune at the end of winter — shorten stems to 2-3 buds in February-March. This is the key step for generous flowering — Campsis flowers on new wood.
- Be patient the first year — in the first season, the plant develops roots rather than flowering abundantly. From the second year, flowering is spectacular. See our winter plant guide to prepare it well.
