Frequently asked questions
Can the Helleborus be kept in a pot outdoors all year round? Yes — hardy down to -15 °C, it can withstand European winters in a pot without special protection, provided it is placed in a sheltered spot away from wind and direct sunlight.
Why is my Helleborus not blooming again? The most common causes are a location that is too sunny, pruning old leaves too early, or a lack of compost in spring — respect the winter rest period and apply organic fertilizer in March.

🌸 Purple-pink winter flowering • 🌿 Evergreen foliage • 🌤️ Partial shade / Shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -15 °C • 📏 H45 cm | Pot Ø17 cm
The Helleborus 'Viv Victoria', also known as Christmas Rose, is an extraordinary perennial - its large purple-pink flowers bloom in the middle of winter, when almost all other plants are dormant. Native to mountainous regions of Europe and Asia Minor, it is hardy down to -15 °C and keeps its dark green foliage all year round. A reliable choice among outdoor plants and hardy plants.
It is also an ideal plant to give as a gift in winter.
Light & placement
Helleborus 'Viv Victoria' thrives in cool, partially shaded locations - similar to its natural habitat beneath trees in mountain woodlands. Direct summer sun scorches its leaves and weakens the plant.
- Light: partial shade to light shade - north- or east-facing is ideal.
- Ideal for: a shaded balcony, north-facing terrace, or plant-filled entrance.
- Temperature: hardy down to -15 °C - withstands frost without protection.
- Growing medium: rich, well-drained, slightly alkaline.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate - keep the growing medium fresh without excess stagnant water, especially in winter. Outdoor plant care should be adapted to the season, from autumn to winter.
- Frequency: approximately once a week, more often during dry weather in summer.
- Pruning: cut faded flowers and old leaves at ground level in early spring to encourage new flowering.
- Fertilizer: adding compost or organic fertilizer in spring is enough to support healthy growth.
- Repotting: every 3 to 4 years in autumn - it prefers to remain in the same container for a long time.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its winter flowering makes it a standout plant when the rest of the balcony is dormant - pair it with evergreen plants that create a green backdrop without competing with its flowers.
- For a winter arrangement: pair it with a Carex Ice Dance with variegated evergreen foliage and a Climbing Ivy - three hardy plants, three different textures, and a cohesive arrangement even in the middle of winter.
- On its own: placed alone in a large terracotta pot near a shaded entrance, it draws the eye throughout the cold season without any competing flowers.
- Decorative pot: a terracotta or stone-grey ceramic pot enhances the soft, natural tones of its purple-pink flowers.
Verdeia tips
- Avoid summer sun: Helleborus tolerates gentle morning light, but direct afternoon sun in summer scorches its leaves and weakens the plant - a shaded location ensures maximum longevity.
- Prune in spring, not winter: wait until flowering has finished and new leaves have appeared before cutting the old ones - they protect the flower buds during winter and should not be removed too early.
- Plant it in a large pot from the start: Helleborus dislikes being disturbed - a Ø25-30 cm pot allows it to establish itself for the long term without frequent repotting.
