Frequently asked questions
When should you prune a Hydrangea arborescens 'Pink Annabelle'? Cut all stems back to 10–15 cm from the ground in February-March — 'Pink Annabelle' blooms on new growth and a short prune each winter produces the largest pink flower clusters.
Why do the flower clusters of Hydrangea 'Pink Annabelle' droop? Drooping clusters are caused by lack of water — water generously as soon as the foliage wilts and mulch the base to keep the soil cool between waterings.

🌸 Immense bright pink spherical flower heads from June to September • 💪 Strong stems — flowers do not droop • ☀️ Partial shade to gentle sun • ❄️ Hardy down to –25 °C • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H30 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
The Hydrangea arborescens 'Pink Annabelle', or pink ball hydrangea, is a perennial shrub resulting from a European horticultural selection, developed to bring pink color to arborescens hydrangeas — a shade absent from the classic variety. Its immense bright pink spherical flower heads, which turn pale pink and then soft green at the end of the season, brighten balconies, terraces, and flower beds with generous, romantic blooms. Among outdoor flowering plants, it is one of the most generous for partially shaded exposures.
Easy to prune, very hardy, and suitable for both pots and open ground, it is the pink version of 'Strong Annabelle'® for a flower-filled and romantic terrace from early summer until the first frosts.
Which ball hydrangea should you choose?
Verdeia offers two Hydrangea arborescens varieties with distinct colors. Here is how to compare them:
- Hydrangea arborescens 'Pink Annabelle' (this plant) — bright pink spherical flower heads turning green at the end of the season, flowering from June to September. The choice for a warm, romantic palette.
- Hydrangea arborescens 'Strong Annabelle'® — pure white spherical flower heads turning soft green, with the same flowering period and reinforced, non-drooping stems. The choice for a brighter, more architectural look, or for a very elegant white-and-pink duo.
Exposure & placement
'Pink Annabelle' thrives in bright partial shade — its pink color is most intense and long-lasting when protected from the hot afternoon sun. Full sun quickly fades the flower heads and shortens flowering. Like all arborescens hydrangeas, it adapts equally well to growing in a pot or in open ground in fresh soil.
- Exposure: partial shade to gentle sun — avoid the midday full sun that fades the pink color.
- Placement: balcony, terrace, courtyard, shaded flower bed, or urban garden.
- Soil: rich, fresh, humus-rich, and slightly acidic — avoid overly chalky soils.
- In a pot: a large container at least 30 cm deep, with slightly acidic substrate.
In chalky regions, preferably water with rainwater — overly chalky tap water causes the foliage to turn yellow and may gradually reduce the intensity of the pink flower heads.
Watering & care
'Pink Annabelle' is very sensitive to a lack of water during hot periods — its foliage visibly droops as soon as the soil dries out. The finger test at a depth of 5 cm is essential for adjusting watering. Leaves that turn yellow outside periods of water stress often have one of the following possible causes: excess chalk or depleted substrate in a pot.
- Watering: abundant and regular in summer — the soil must never dry out completely.
- Pruning: at the end of winter, cut all stems back to 10–15 cm above the soil to renew flowering completely.
- Fertilizer: use fertilizer for flowering plants or a special hydrangea fertilizer in spring — avoid nitrogen-rich fertilizers, which encourage foliage growth.
- Dried flowers: leave the flower heads in place throughout winter — they protect the buds and are decorative when frosted.
Never prune 'Pink Annabelle' in autumn — it flowers on the current year's wood, and winter pruning to 10–15 cm above the soil in February-March is not only harmless but essential for dense flowering.
Decorating ideas & plant combinations
The generous bright pink color of 'Pink Annabelle', its impressive volume, and its long flowering period make it a structural plant that brings warmth and romance to any composition — both in a Mediterranean garden and in a lush outdoor jungle.
- For a striking white-and-pink contrast in a flower bed, pair it with the white Hydrangea 'Strong Annabelle'® — the same habit and flowering period, with a pink-and-white palette that evolves together toward green at the end of the season.
- For a very graphic red-and-pink zen effect, place it beside the potted Acer palmatum 'Garnet' — the maple's finely cut garnet-red foliage and the hydrangea's immense pink flower heads create a warm, sophisticated palette with a Japanese garden feel.
- For an evergreen backdrop that intensifies the pink, plant it in front of an evergreen Lonicera henryi — the honeysuckle's glossy dark green foliage enhances the warmth of the flower heads' pink color by contrast.
- To enhance pink flower heads in a pot, a bottle-green or anthracite-gray ceramic decorative pot creates the sharpest contrast — the cool background intensifies the warm pink of the flowers and adds depth to the composition.
The cut flowers of 'Pink Annabelle' are beautiful fresh or dried — cut the stems at 40–50 cm as soon as the flower heads are fully open and immediately place them in water for optimal vase life.
Verdeia tips
- Cut it back hard at the end of every winter without exception: 'Pink Annabelle' flowers on the current year's shoots — severe pruning to 10–15 cm above the soil in February-March produces vigorous stems bearing larger flower heads than an unpruned plant, which flowers higher up with small, scattered flower heads.
- Water generously on very hot days: drooping foliage in hot weather is an immediate warning signal — water in the evening to let the water penetrate without evaporation, and mulch around the base to retain soil moisture between waterings.
- Do not remove the flower heads in autumn: old inflorescences left in place protect the buds just below them from winter frosts — remove them only in February during the annual pruning.
