🌵 Architectural triangular stems • ☀️ Bright light to direct sunlight • 💧 Very low watering • 🌸 Spectacular nocturnal flowering • 🐾 Non-toxic
Native to the tropical forests of Central America and Mexico, the Hylocereus undatus is an epiphytic cactus that naturally climbs trees in the canopy. Its fleshy bright green triangular stems, with wavy and slightly spiny edges, form an immediately recognizable architectural silhouette — that of the famous dragon fruit cactus, or pitaya. Discover our entire cactus and succulents collection and our original and rare plants.
On a mature plant in good conditions, it can produce giant white nocturnal flowers 25 to 30 cm in size — among the most spectacular in the plant kingdom — followed by edible exotic fruits. At this compact stage (H15 cm | Pot Ø11 cm), it is primarily a graphic and easy-care plant, with remarkable long-term potential.
Which cactus to choose?
Our catalog offers several cacti with very different silhouettes — here’s how to place the Hylocereus undatus among them:
- Hylocereus undatus (this plant) — climbing or trailing triangular stems, giant nocturnal flowering, edible fruits (H15 cm | Pot Ø11 cm). The most spectacular cactus at maturity.
- Opuntia rubescens Consolea — stacked flattened pads, upright architectural habit, prominent spines. The most sculptural and imposing version.
- Epiphyllum anguliger — flat zigzag-cut stems, very graphic trailing habit, fragrant nocturnal flowering. The most original trailing version.
- Rhipsalis coral red — fine trailing stems with red berries, very decorative airy habit. The most delicate and trailing version.
- Mix of 6 assorted cacti — six different varieties for a varied composition. The ideal version to start a collection.
Light & location
Native to bright tropical zones, the Hylocereus undatus needs bright light to keep its stems compact and vigorous. In shade, the stems become etiolated and lose their characteristic thickness — this is one of the most common mistakes with indoor cacti.
- Light: bright direct or intense indirect light — a few hours of direct sun are beneficial.
- Ideal: sunny south-facing windowsill, bright veranda, or balcony in warm seasons.
- Temperature: 18 to 30 °C — tolerates heat but is sensitive to frost.
- Substrate: very well-draining — special cactus mix (cactus soil, perlite, sand).
Watering & care
Like all cacti, the Hylocereus undatus stores reserves in its fleshy stems and prefers dryness to persistent moisture. The golden rule: let the substrate dry completely before watering — stem rot is irreversible and occurs quickly if overwatered.
- Watering: very low — let the substrate dry completely between waterings.
- Frequency: every 2 to 3 weeks in spring-summer, once a month in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and very well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: tolerates dry air — no need for misting.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer, diluted special liquid cactus fertilizer.
- Winter rest: greatly reduce watering in autumn-winter to respect its natural dormancy.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
- Cactus composition: pair it with an Opuntia Consolea for the contrast of flat pads / triangular stems, and a trailing Epiphyllum anguliger — three radically different silhouettes, same graphic green palette.
- Succulent duo: our Aloe Spider & Hylocereus duo is already composed and ready to place — a simple way to integrate this cactus indoors without effort in composition.
- On a stake: guide its stems along a vertical stake to achieve an architectural climbing silhouette — particularly spectacular on a high window or wall shelf.
- Ideal pot: natural terracotta or decorative pot cover terracotta to extend the tropical and dry vibe of the bright green foliage.
Verdeia tips
- Never water if the substrate is still moist: stem rot is the only real risk — better to skip a watering than to overwater, especially in winter when monthly watering is more than enough.
- Place it in the brightest spot in your home: thick, compact, and well-colored stems indicate sufficient light — thin and pale stems indicate a lack of light.
- Handle with care: its spines are discreet but present — use gloves when repotting every 2 to 3 years in spring into fresh, very well-draining substrate.
