❤️ Bright red young shoots all season • 🌿 Blue-green foliage in summer • 🍂 Bronze-red in winter • ☀️ Sun or partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -15 °C • 🪴 Compact habit, ideal in a pot
Nandina domestica Obsessed™ 'Seika' is a compact sacred bamboo whose bright red shoots appear not only in spring, but throughout the season. A US horticultural selection (Texas), identified as a mutation of 'Gulf Stream', it is one of the catalogue's cold-hardy plants that remain colourful in winter.
Its young leaves emerge bright red, then mature to blue-green, often edged in red. As new red shoots form throughout the summer, the plant remains bicoloured during the warmer months. In autumn and winter, the entire foliage takes on bronze-red tones. Its slow growth keeps it compact, around 60 to 90 cm at maturity.
Which colourful foliage shrub should you choose?
Ten evergreen shrubs from the catalogue, chosen for their foliage rather than their flowers:
- Nandina Obsessed™ 'Seika' (this plant) — bright red shoots renewed throughout the summer, bronze-red in winter. The reddest nandina in every season.
- Nandina 'Twilight' — bright pink young shoots, then green marbled with white, coppery in autumn. The only variegated nandina.
- Nandina 'Lemon Lime' — lemon-yellow young shoots, then bright acid green. The brightest of the nandinas, without berries.
- Nandina 'Gulf Stream' — coppery young shoots, blue-green in summer and orange-red in winter. A dense, slow-growing ball.
- Nandina Blush Pink™ — pink young shoots, reddish green in summer and fuchsia red in winter. The most compact, around 50 cm.
- Photinia 'Little Red Robin' on a stem — bright red young shoots on a 90 cm stem. The most colourful in spring, for a sunny position.
- 'Emerald 'n' Gold' spindle tree on a stem — small green and gold leaves, shaped into a ball on a 90 cm stem. The most structured, in sun or partial shade.
- Leucothoé 'Burning Love' — smooth, narrow leaves, burgundy red in spring and purple in winter. The deepest purple, for partial shade in ericaceous soil.
- Leucothoe 'Little Flames' - green leaves with flame-red tips in winter. The best choice for a small shade hedge.
- Japanese aralia 'Spider Web' - large palmate leaves speckled with white, for partial shade. The most exotic.
Unlike leucothoes, nandinas grow in ordinary soil, even alkaline soil, and tolerate sun: they are the easiest to place.
Exposure & location
It likes bright, sheltered locations: in sun, its red shoots are brighter and more numerous. It dislikes sites exposed to cold drafts, as well as reflected sun against a light-colored wall in midsummer.
- Exposure: sun or bright partial shade, sheltered from cold winds.
- Location: southeast- or west-facing balcony, sheltered terrace, entrance, railing planter.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -15 °C - it remains outdoors in winter.
- Soil type: any rich, well-drained potting soil, acidic, neutral, or alkaline.
In very cold weather, it may lose some of its leaves: it starts growing again in spring from the stems, with new red shoots.
Watering & care
It tolerates a short drought in summer better than a waterlogged pot in winter: a well-draining substrate with clay pebbles at the bottom prevents the water from stagnating, and an absence of a few days in summer still needs to be prepared for when grown in a pot.
- Watering: moderate - when the first few centimeters of the substrate are dry, greatly reduced in winter.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for shrubs, in spring.
- Pruning: rarely necessary - at the end of winter, cut frost-damaged stems back to the base.
- Repotting: the following spring, in a slightly wider pot, using shrub potting soil.
Fertilizer in spring followed by a second application in early July keeps the red shoots emerging throughout summer.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its bright red color gives a planter structure all year round: choosing its neighbors according to the exposure makes it possible to pair it with plants with the same needs.
- For a Christmas planter, plant a Christmas rose 'Christmas Carol' beside it - its pure white flowers stand out against the bronze-red foliage of the nandina from November to March.
- For a dark green backdrop, place a Laurustinus behind it — evergreen, it flowers white from November to March and brings out the red.
- To dress the edge of the pot, plant a Carex 'Ice Dance' — its cream edging and fine leaves contrast with the red shoots.
- To enhance the pot, choose the taupe Capi Nature Groove pot — its light, warm shade brings out the red, which a dark pot would dull.
Combined with Nandina 'Lemon Lime' in the same planter, it creates a red and lime-green contrast in every season.
Verdeia tips
- Give it as a holiday gift: red in winter, it is an excellent alternative to a short-lived Christmas plant and remains decorative all year round. Our guide to giving a plant in winter helps you choose according to the recipient.
- Shelter it from cold winds: it is icy wind, more than frost, that causes it to lose its leaves. Against a wall or solid railing, it keeps its foliage all winter.
- Keep it out of reach of animals: all parts of the nandina are toxic to dogs, cats, and birds if they consume them.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Shipping is done within 48 business hours, with tracked delivery within 2 to 5 business days. Delivery costs €5.60 — free for orders over €50. You will receive a tracking link as soon as the package is shipped.
What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
