🍋 Lemon-yellow young shoots • 🌿 Bright acid green • 🚫 Sterile variety, no berries • ☀️ Sun or partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -15 °C • 🪴 Dense clump to the ground
Nandina domestica 'Lemon Lime' is a sacred bamboo with bright yellow-green foliage, the only nandina in the catalogue to feature lemon tones rather than red. Native to an East Asian species (China, Japan), it is one of our easy-care plants: any type of soil, sun or partial shade, and virtually no pruning.
Its young shoots emerge lemon yellow, then mature to an acid green that darkens slightly with age: both shades coexist on the plant, giving it a two-tone effect. A sterile variety, it generally produces neither flowers nor berries, and forms a dense clump with leaves down to the ground.
Which shrub with colourful foliage should you choose?
Ten evergreen shrubs from the catalogue, chosen for their foliage rather than their flowers:
- Nandina 'Lemon Lime' (this plant) — lemon-yellow young shoots, then bright acid green. The brightest nandina, without berries.
- Nandina 'Twilight' — bright pink young shoots, then green marbled with white, coppery in autumn. The only variegated nandina.
- Nandina Obsessed™ 'Seika' — bright red shoots renewed throughout the summer, bronze-red in winter. The reddest nandina in every season.
- Nandina 'Gulf Stream' — coppery young shoots, blue-green in summer and orange-red in winter. A dense, slow-growing ball.
- Nandina Blush Pink™ — pink young shoots, reddish green in summer and fuchsia red in winter. The most compact, around 50 cm.
- Photinia 'Little Red Robin' on a standard — bright red young shoots on a 90 cm standard. The most colourful in spring, for a sunny position.
- Spindle tree 'Emerald 'n' Gold' on a standard — small green and gold leaves, formed into a ball on a 90 cm standard. The most structured, in sun or partial shade.
- Leucothoé 'Burning Love' — smooth, narrow leaves, burgundy red in spring and purple in winter. The deepest purple, for partial shade in ericaceous soil.
- 'Little Flames' leucothoe - green leaves with flame-red tips in winter. The best suited to a small shade hedge.
- 'Spider Web' Japanese aralia - large palmate leaves speckled with white, for partial shade. The most exotic.
Unlike leucothoes, nandinas grow in ordinary soil, even alkaline soil, and tolerate sun: they are the easiest to place.
Exposure & location
It grows in sun as well as partial shade. In sun, the yellow of the young shoots is brighter; in partial shade, the foliage tends toward acid green and brightens less luminous corners. Only reflected afternoon sun in summer can burn its young leaves.
- Exposure: sun or partial shade, sheltered from scorching sun against a light-colored wall.
- Location: east- or west-facing balcony, terrace, entrance, large corner planter.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -15 °C - it stays outdoors in winter.
- Soil type: any well-drained potting soil, acidic, neutral, or alkaline - never allow standing water.
In front of a dark wall or dark green hedge, its yellow-green color stands out like a source of light.
Watering & care
It prefers a consistently moist but never waterlogged substrate: testing the substrate with your finger indicates when to water, and leaves that turn yellow and lose their luster, unlike the lemon-yellow color of young shoots, often signal excess water.
- Watering: moderate - when the first few centimeters of the substrate are dry, less frequently in winter.
- Water: the water from the tap is suitable.
- Fertilizer: shrub fertilizer, in spring.
- Pruning: rarely necessary - at the end of winter, cut damaged stems back to the base.
- Repotting: every two to three years, in spring, in a wider pot, using shrub potting soil.
Applying fertilizer in spring encourages new lemon-yellow shoots to emerge, which are the most decorative.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its yellow-green color brightens compositions of dark foliage: choosing companions according to exposure makes it possible to pair it with plants with the same needs.
- For a burgundy and lemon contrast, plant a 'Double Ellen Red' Lenten Rose at its base - its purple-burgundy flowers from February to April stand out against the light foliage.
- For a dark green backdrop, place a Laurustinus behind it — its dark foliage makes the nandina appear even brighter, and it blooms white from November to March.
- To dress the edge of the pot, plant a Carex 'Ice Dance' — its fine, cream-edged leaves extend the brightness of the foliage.
- To enhance the pot, choose the Capi Nature Skin anthracite pot — the dark grey makes the yellow-green stand out like no other color.
Paired with Nandina 'Gulf Stream' in the same planter, it creates a lemon and orangey-red contrast in winter.
Verdeia tips
- Protect the pot below -15 °C: in very cold weather, it may lose some of its leaves and regrow in spring. Move the pot closer to a wall or surround it with winter protection fleece. Our guide to cold-hardy plants helps you create a winter balcony.
- Cut one old stem out of three every two years: at the end of winter, this encourages young yellow shoots to emerge from the base and keeps the clump dense.
- Keep it out of reach of animals: all parts of the nandina are toxic to dogs, cats, and birds if they consume them.
